As of 7 October 2026, our streaming ranking puts ExpressVPN first with 8.9/10, then NordVPN, Surfshark, Proton VPN, IPVanish, Private Internet Access and CyberGhost. In our research (October 2026), ExpressVPN scores 95% or more with five of the six main services and 78% for Netflix across all libraries. The page ranks the VPNs, then covers each service's rules, common problems and prices, as part of our VPN guides for streaming and TV.

You need a VPN only for another country's catalog, because some services follow you abroad

A VPN helps when you want a catalog your location does not show: a US library from Europe, BBC iPlayer from abroad, or your home catalog on a trip. At home you do not need one, and several services already follow you abroad.

Traveling: some services give you your home catalog abroad, and others do not

Without a VPN, most services show the catalog of the country you are in. EU portability rules, explained below, are the exception.

ServiceWhat you get abroad without a VPN
NetflixThe catalog of the country you are in. For EU members inside the EU, their home catalog for a limited period.
Prime VideoFor EU residents in the EU, their home titles. Outside the EU, Amazon Originals.
Disney+What is available where you are. For EU subscribers in the EU or EEA, their home catalog.
HBO MaxThe catalog of any country where it is offered. Downloads play anywhere.
Paramount+The local service where offered. A US subscription works only in the US.
BBC iPlayerNo streaming. Shows downloaded in the UK on a phone or tablet play abroad until they expire.
Hulu and PeacockNothing: both are for US viewers.

EU portability lets paid subscribers use home services across the EU, and UK subscribers lost it

EU rules require paid online content services to let subscribers who are temporarily in another member state use the service as at home. The rules apply from 1 April 2018, and the law sets no number of days.

  • Paid services verify your residence at sign-up and renewal. UK law revoked the rules at the end of 2020, so UK subscribers lost them when traveling in the EU.
  • Sky Ireland customers can use Sky Go and Sky Sports in listed European countries for up to 30 days at a time. DAZN says verified subscribers can use their home service in another EEA country. Channel 4+ works only in the UK, even from the EU.

Another country's catalog: a VPN can show it, but many services' terms bar hiding your location

A VPN makes a service see the country of the VPN server. Netflix says a VPN can make a device look as if it is somewhere else, and may limit you to titles it licenses worldwide. Whether it works depends on the VPN, the service and the server, which is why we rank by research scores.

Legality: the law and the services' terms are separate questions

A streaming service reads your IP address, and a VPN, Smart DNS or router changes what it sees

A streaming service finds your location from the IP address of your connection, the number that identifies your network online. BBC iPlayer says it checks that the address is registered in the UK. A VPN replaces your address with its server's, so the service sees the server's country.

Services also try to recognize VPN servers. Nothing we read from Netflix describes its detection signals, so the clues come from IP-data and VPN companies. MaxMind says a VPN whose addresses are not registered in its own name is likely labeled a hosting provider, so a data-center origin is itself a signal. NordVPN says a dedicated address lets you avoid block lists of addresses tainted by misuse.

Our VPN IP checker lets you check whether a VPN's address is flagged on public VPN and data-center lists, though it cannot show what any service sees.

Some Smart DNS services have stopped working with streaming: Surfshark retired its own on 2 February 2026, and CyberGhost says its version is no longer compatible.

Connect to a server in the country whose catalog you want, then check the stream

Six steps get you watching, and the server's country decides what you see.

  1. Buy the VPN on its website. Private Internet Access and CyberGhost exclude app-store purchases from their guarantees, and Apple or Google refund ExpressVPN app-store purchases.
  2. Install the VPN app on the device you watch on and sign in. For a Fire TV Stick, follow the Fire TV install steps.
  3. Connect to a server in the country whose catalog you want, such as the UK for BBC iPlayer or the US for Hulu.
  4. Play a title and check that you see the catalog you wanted. If it is still your own, test whether your VPN is working.
  5. If Netflix blocks the connection, VPN companies advise another server in the same country and an app restart. BBC iPlayer, Prime Video, Disney+, HBO Max and Hulu say to turn the VPN off.
  6. If it still fails, ask for a refund before the money-back window ends.

In their help pages, ExpressVPN, CyberGhost, Private Internet Access and Proton VPN tell you to use a server in the country where you are, while their marketing promises more. Surfshark says to choose the location by streaming service. What the servers do in practice is in the research scores below.

Fire TV, Android TV and Apple TV have VPN apps, while Roku, Samsung and LG TVs have none listed

All seven VPNs we cover have a Fire OS app and an Android TV app, and six have an Apple TV app. None lists an app for Roku, Samsung or LG. Our best VPN for Google TV page ranks the Android TV apps.

Our VPN on TV guide covers every TV device.

  • Fire TV: Amazon says to find your software version under Settings › My Fire TV › About. Its specifications list Vega OS 1.1 and 2.0 and Fire OS 7 and 8, so a version starting with 1 or 2 is Vega OS. The Fire TV guide shows which VPN apps install on each system.
  • Vega OS, the newer Fire TV system, has apps from ExpressVPN, NordVPN, Surfshark, Proton VPN and IPVanish. Private Internet Access says its app is not compatible, and we found no CyberGhost app.
  • Roku, Samsung and LG: each of the top five documents a router setup, and ExpressVPN and NordVPN also point to Smart DNS for some Samsung and LG TVs.

Speed: HD needs about 5 Mbps on most services, and 4K needs 15 to 25 Mbps

Netflix recommends 5 Mbps for Full HD and 15 Mbps for 4K, per stream. Disney+ and HBO Max ask for 25 Mbps for 4K, and BBC iPlayer for 24 Mbit/s on supported TVs. Check your speed with the VPN connected.

ExpressVPN leads our streaming ranking, and our research shows where each VPN is strong or weak

ExpressVPN tops our streaming ranking with 8.9/10, and CyberGhost comes seventh with 5.8/10. The order suits you if you watch several services: ExpressVPN is second in each of our six service rankings, and no VPN is first in all six. If you watch mostly one service, go to that service's section instead.

IPVanish leads our Netflix ranking, with the highest research score for Netflix across all libraries (83%, in our research of October 2026). It is fifth here because it scores 62% for BBC iPlayer (UK) and 67% for Prime Video. Our Netflix and Fire TV guides rank the VPNs for their own use, and ExpressVPN leads the Fire TV ranking, where device compatibility counts for more.

The score combines how well each VPN works in practice in our research, device compatibility, features, and price and refunds. How we rank explains how rankings work on this site.

Surfshark sits just above Proton VPN because of a lower first-term price, as an EU visitor saw it on 6 October 2026, and unlimited devices. Proton VPN scores higher with Netflix and HBO Max, and Surfshark with Prime Video, Disney+ and Hulu (US). Private Internet Access is sixth. In our research (October 2026), it scores 39% for Disney+ and 70% for Netflix across all libraries, and shows not enough data for three of the six services. CyberGhost is seventh, with 35% for Disney+ and 33% for BBC iPlayer (UK) in the same research.

How to read the research scores: each one covers one VPN with one service. A score of 100% means all the recent evidence we gathered says the VPN works. A lower score means some evidence says it was blocked or worked only on some servers. BBC iPlayer is scored for the UK, Hulu for the US, and Netflix across all its country libraries together, on any device.

Research scores for the six main services, and what every service says about VPNs

Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, HBO Max and Hulu have research scores in the table above, and BBC iPlayer (UK), the sixth, is under UK channels. The other services below have too little recent evidence for any VPN, so for them we cannot name a VPN or server that works and give only their rules.

Netflix: IPVanish scores highest across all libraries in our research, and NordVPN in the US

In our research (October 2026), the seven VPNs score 64% to 83% across all Netflix libraries. NordVPN has the highest US-library score (87%), and Proton VPN has the highest for the UK (91%) and Japan (85%).

  • Netflix says VPNs are not supported on an ad-supported plan or for live events. With a VPN you may see only titles it licenses worldwide, such as Squid Game and Stranger Things.
  • Server advice: connect to a server in the country whose catalog you want. NordVPN says to try another server in the same country if Netflix blocks it, and ExpressVPN lists six US servers to try in order.

Our Netflix guide ranks five picks by their Netflix score, led by IPVanish, and covers plans and prices by country.

Prime Video: ExpressVPN scores highest in our research, ahead of NordVPN and Surfshark

ExpressVPN scores highest with Prime Video in our research (October 2026), at 95%, with NordVPN and Surfshark at 94%. IPVanish scores lowest of the five with data, at 67%. Private Internet Access and CyberGhost show not enough data.

  • Prime Video's terms, updated on 26 August 2026, say users "may not use any technology or technique to obscure or disguise" their location. Amazon's playback checklist says to deactivate any VPN or proxy server.
  • IPVanish says Prime Video blocks the addresses VPN servers use and suggests split tunneling, which sends chosen apps outside the VPN.

Our page on the best VPN for Amazon Prime Video adds football abroad and the steps to clear its VPN or proxy error.

Disney+: ExpressVPN, NordVPN and IPVanish score highest in our research

ExpressVPN, NordVPN and IPVanish score highest with Disney+ in our research (October 2026), at 99%. Private Internet Access scores 39% and CyberGhost 35%.

  • Disney+ error 73 says the content "isn't available to watch in your current location" and tells anyone using "a VPN or similar method" to disable it. The US Disney+, ESPN and Hulu agreement, updated 17 October 2025, forbids "using any technology or technique to obscure or disguise your location".

Our best VPN for Disney+ page covers error 73 step by step and what Disney+ lets you watch abroad.

HBO Max: ExpressVPN, NordVPN and Private Internet Access score highest in our research

ExpressVPN, NordVPN and Private Internet Access score 100% with HBO Max in our research (October 2026). Surfshark scores lowest of the five with data, at 75%. IPVanish and CyberGhost show not enough data.

  • HBO Max shows an "Are you using a VPN?" message. Its US terms (24 June 2026) and UK terms (9 February 2026) say users are "prohibited from using any technology to mask your location".
  • You may not need a VPN: HBO Max launched in Italy, Germany and six other markets on 13 January 2026, and in the UK and Ireland on 26 March 2026. Its help center also lists Australia.
  • HBO Max says its "Not available in your region yet" message means your IP address is blocked or misread.

Our HBO Max VPN ranking covers the VPN message fix and where HBO Max is available after its 2026 launches.

Hulu (US): ExpressVPN and Surfshark score highest in our research, ahead of NordVPN

ExpressVPN and Surfshark score 100% with Hulu (US) in our research (October 2026), and NordVPN 98%. CyberGhost scores lowest of the six with data, at 88%. Private Internet Access shows not enough data.

  • Hulu's error reads "You appear to be using an anonymous proxy tool". Our best VPN for Hulu ranking covers the error, Hulu's rules abroad and Hulu + Live TV.

Paramount+ bans VPNs in its terms, and our research has no VPN score yet

Paramount+'s help page (last changed 9 September 2025) says it blocks any VPN, proxy or rerouting software because it "can't determine the exact purpose". Our research (October 2026) has too little data to score any VPN with it.

  • Its US terms, updated on 15 September 2026, forbid accessing or signing up "using a virtual private network". The Canadian terms (31 July 2026) and Australian terms (18 February 2025) contain the same ban, and the UK terms (7 October 2024) bar a "virtual proxy network". Abroad, use the local service of the country you visit.

Peacock is for US residents only, and says your device must be in the US

Peacock's terms (updated 3 December 2025) say it is for US residents aged 18 or older and may not be used from outside the US. No VPN has a research score with Peacock yet (October 2026).

  • From an Italian address, peacocktv.com shows "Unavailable In Your Region" and says your device must physically be in the US. The terms forbid concealing your identity or location. Nothing we read from Peacock offers a way to watch from outside the US.

Apple's US terms do not mention VPNs, but tie your content to your Home Country

The Apple TV streaming service is Apple's subscription, not the Apple TV box. Apple's US Media Services Terms do not mention VPNs or proxies, and nothing we read from Apple covers VPN errors. No VPN has a research score with it yet (October 2026).

  • Apple's Media Services Terms (US version, updated 14 September 2026) tie services to your account's Home Country and warn that some content may be unavailable when you travel. All Family Sharing members must share one Home Country.

Crunchyroll bans VPNs in its terms, and its help center calls them unsupported

Crunchyroll's terms say the use of "VPNs, proxy servers, IP spoofing, or similar methods to circumvent geo-filtering mechanisms is strictly prohibited". No VPN has a research score with Crunchyroll yet (October 2026).

  • Its help center says a VPN used to reach content not licensed in your region "isn't supported". It can cause playback issues, login errors or limited features, and Crunchyroll advises turning VPNs off.

Tubi tells visitors from Italy it is not available in Europe, and Pluto TV says it blocks VPNs

From Italy, tubitv.com redirects to a page saying Tubi is "not available in Europe due to changes in EU laws". Pluto TV says its VPN message means it detected a VPN, proxy or rerouting software, and it blocks any use of them. Our research (October 2026) has too little data to score any VPN with Tubi or Pluto TV.

  • Tubi's help center lists apps for viewers in Canada, Australia, Mexico, the UK and other countries, and Pluto TV has 31 country editions.

Live TV and sports services check where you are, and most say not to hide your location

Live TV and sports services decide what you can watch from your location, and several tie it to blackouts. Only ESPN has research scores (October 2026), for two VPNs. For the others we cannot name a VPN or server that works.

YouTube TV says it checks your location and home area, and that a VPN stops it playing

YouTube TV says it is available in the United States and that no programs can be accessed while traveling internationally. Our research (October 2026) has too little data to score any VPN with it.

  • YouTube TV says you cannot stream while connected to a VPN or proxy, and advises turning it off.
  • YouTube TV says your home area, set by zip code, decides what you can watch and record, and that you can change it at most twice in 12 months. Away from home in the US, it says TV-app users update the "Current playback area" at tv.youtube.com/verify. It also says frequent travelers should use the service at home at least once every 3 months.

Our guide to fixing YouTube TV's verify location prompt lists the fixes, quickest first, and what NordVPN says about it.

Sling TV says it can be streamed only within the 50 US states and Puerto Rico

Sling's help center says the service is geo-gated and can be streamed only within the 50 United States and Puerto Rico. Our research (October 2026) has too little data to score any VPN with Sling TV.

Fubo says its services are for the US, Canada and Spain, and that VPNs must be turned off

Fubo says most of its programming is available only in the US and US territories, with separate services in Canada and Spain whose programming differs. Our research (October 2026) has too little data to score any VPN with Fubo.

  • In the US, Fubo says VPNs prevent it from verifying your location and must be disabled, and that work VPNs can trigger the same block. Its message reads "Your IP address cannot be used to access Fubo content".
  • In the US, Fubo says a network that uses a VPN or proxy cannot be your Home Network. Each device must also check in from the home area every 30 days to keep regional sports networks.

DAZN says it does not support VPNs, and bars them when you subscribe to NFL Game Pass

DAZN's help center says it does not support the use of VPNs, citing licensing agreements, fair usage, security and streaming quality. Our research (October 2026) has too little data to score any VPN with DAZN.

  • DAZN says using a VPN to subscribe to NFL Game Pass International from another country breaks its terms and will be blocked by its technology. NFL+ is for the US only, and the NFL directs viewers outside the US to DAZN.

ESPN: Disney's terms say it is US-only, and only NordVPN and Surfshark have research scores

Disney's US agreement, updated 17 October 2025, says ESPN is available only in the United States and certain of its territories. The same agreement forbids hiding your location, as quoted under Disney+.

In our research (October 2026), NordVPN scores 97% and Surfshark 99% with ESPN. ExpressVPN, Proton VPN, IPVanish, Private Internet Access and CyberGhost show not enough data.

  • ESPN says a "subject to blackout" message means the event is not available in your location, which it determines by IP address.

MLB.TV, NBA League Pass, Kayo and F1 TV each tie what you can watch to your location

ServiceWhat decides what you can watchWhat it says about workarounds
MLB.TVHome-territory blackouts, which can extend outside the USA live stream triggers a location check. MLB's terms say circumventing a blackout leads to termination and a USD 100 charge.
NBA League PassTerritories set by the NBA, and in the US a blackout of nationally broadcast live gamesThe subscriber agreement says circumventing a blackout or use restriction brings termination and a USD 100 charge.
KayoAustralia onlyKayo says to disable any VPN, and error 97-000-1 means an active VPN is preventing playback.
F1 TVYour Home Territory, which is the country of purchase, and elsewhere the rights where you areThe terms (August 2025) forbid any technology or tool to alter, mask or disguise your location.

UK channels tie streaming to the UK, and BBC iPlayer is the only one with research scores

Every UK service below ties streaming to the UK, and Channel 4 also covers Ireland. BBC iPlayer is the only one with research scores, so for the others we cannot name a VPN or server that works and give only their rules.

BBC iPlayer (UK): ExpressVPN, NordVPN, Surfshark and Proton VPN score highest in our research

In our research (October 2026), ExpressVPN, NordVPN, Surfshark and Proton VPN score 100% with BBC iPlayer (UK), IPVanish 62% and CyberGhost 33%. Private Internet Access shows not enough data.

  • The BBC says a show will not play if it detects a possible VPN or proxy. Our best VPN for BBC iPlayer ranking covers the BBC's rules, the TV Licence and fixes.

ITVX says it actively blocks VPNs

ITVX can be used only in the UK, and ITV's help center states "We do not support the use of VPNs and actively block them". No VPN has a research score with ITVX yet (October 2026).

  • ITVX codes ending in 102, such as ITV-1X-102, mean it detected a VPN, and ITV's fix is to turn the VPN off. Codes ending in 101 mean it thinks you are outside the UK or, in the UK, using a VPN.

Channel 4 is limited to the UK and Ireland, and My5 has no data yet

Channel 4 says its streaming service is available only in the UK and the Republic of Ireland, and Channel 4+ terms bar access "using a virtual proxy network". Our research (October 2026) has too little data to score any VPN with Channel 4 or My5.

  • Channel 4 says its "content not available in your area" message can mean your IP address is not registered as UK-based or is blacklisted. Nothing we read from Channel 5 covers My5 yet.

Sky Go and NOW tie streaming to the UK, and Sky says VPNs are not supported

Sky says VPNs, ad blockers and Apple's Private Relay are not supported on Sky Go, and UK customers are not entitled to stream Sky outside the UK with Sky apps. Our research (October 2026) has too little data to score any VPN with Sky Go or NOW.

  • NOW's terms (July 2026) forbid accessing it through a VPN or proxy, and a NOW membership must be bought in the UK. Sky Go lets UK customers download shows over Wi-Fi before leaving home to watch offline abroad.

Services in Australia, Canada and Europe tie streaming to their own countries

The Australian services and CBC Gem below say their content is licensed for one country, and that a VPN can block access. Our research (October 2026) has too little data to score any VPN with any service in this group, so we give their rules without a pick.

ABC iview works only in Australia, and ABC asks you to turn VPNs off

ABC says iview can be viewed only in Australia, and overseas viewers get an "ABC Australia" collection and the ABC NEWS live stream. With a VPN, in Australia or abroad, ABC says it cannot work out your location, and even a VPN set to Australia may cause issues.

SBS On Demand says even a VPN set to Australia can trigger its error

SBS says SBS On Demand streams only within Australia, even for Australian citizens overseas. It does not support access with an active VPN.

  • The error reads "This video is only available in Australia", and SBS says a VPN set to Australia can still trigger it and must be turned off.

7plus says it does not support any VPN, proxy service or spoofing of location

7plus says its content is available only from within Australia, and that it "does not support the use of any VPN, proxy services or spoofing of location".

  • Its "We couldn't verify your location" screen asks you to disable any VPN or proxy.

9Now says a VPN can block access, even for viewers in Australia

Nine says 9Now may show live and on-demand content only within Australia because it has no international streaming rights. Its help says a VPN can block access even for users in Australia and must be disabled.

  • On an iPhone or iPad, 9Now suggests deleting the VPN profile and restarting the device.

Stan says it cannot be used with a VPN or custom DNS, including Smart DNS

Stan says it is licensed only in Australia and uses geo-blocking. It says you cannot access Stan with a VPN or custom DNS service enabled, so its block covers Smart DNS too. Our research (October 2026) has no score for Stan.

  • Stan error codes L8 and A26 appear when you are outside Australia or on a VPN.

CBC Gem is limited to Canada, and nothing we read from Crave covers VPNs

CBC says all of CBC Gem's video is geofenced to Canada, and an account needs a Canadian postal code. Its message reads "This content is not available in your location.", and CBC warns that VPN and proxy services are blocked from certain content.

  • Nothing we read from Crave says how it treats VPNs, and our research has too little data to score any VPN with it.

RaiPlay shows only RaiNews24 live abroad, and ZDF and ARTE have no data yet

Rai holds live streaming rights only for Italy, so from abroad only the RaiNews24 live channel plays, and RaiPlay's on-demand offer abroad is reduced and varies by country.

  • Our research (October 2026) has too little data to score any VPN with RaiPlay, ZDF or ARTE, and we have not read ZDF's or ARTE's own VPN rules yet.

Services say their VPN errors mean they spotted a VPN or proxy, and most tell you to turn it off

The services' own fix is to turn the VPN off. For Netflix, VPN companies advise connecting to another server in the same country and restarting the app.

Netflix error E106 means Netflix has spotted a VPN or proxy

Netflix error E106 says "You seem to be using a VPN or proxy. Please turn off any of these services and try again." TVs can show the same message as tvq-pb-101.

  • With a VPN on purpose, ExpressVPN and NordVPN advise switching to another server first (NordVPN says one in the same country), then force-closing and reopening the Netflix app.
  • With no VPN on, Netflix's own check is to open fast.com, select Show more info and confirm that the Client country is where you are.

The full fixes for E106 cover the cache reset, the no-VPN case and notes for TVs, quickest first.

How each VPN does with streaming services, in ranking order

Each VPN suits different services, and no VPN leads on all six. The list below follows our streaming ranking. VPN providers compared covers the companies behind them.

  • Choose ExpressVPN if you watch several services. It scores 95% or more with five of the six in our research (October 2026), and its weakest is Netflix, at 78% across all libraries. ExpressVPN's streaming scores and TV apps go further.
  • Choose NordVPN for Netflix in the US, where it has the highest research score (87%, October 2026). In our research, it scores 69% across all Netflix libraries and 94% or more with the other five services. See NordVPN's scores for each service.
  • Choose Surfshark for BBC iPlayer (UK), Hulu (US) and Prime Video: it leads our ranking for each of the three, with 100%, 100% and 94% in our research (October 2026). It scores lower with HBO Max (75%) and Netflix across all libraries (64%). It allows unlimited devices at once and retired its Smart DNS on 2 February 2026. Surfshark's scores by service have the detail.
  • Choose Proton VPN for Netflix in the UK and Japan, where it has the highest scores in our research (91% and 85%, October 2026). It also scores 100% for BBC iPlayer (UK) but only 73% for Disney+. Proton says streaming support on its Fire TV app needs a paid plan, and for Netflix a Plus server. Read Proton VPN's Netflix and Disney+ scores.
  • Choose IPVanish for Netflix across all libraries, where it has the highest score in our research (83%, October 2026). It also scores 99% for Disney+, but only 62% for BBC iPlayer (UK) and 67% for Prime Video. It allows unlimited devices at once for personal use. Its help pages suggest routing Prime Video, Netflix or Hulu outside the VPN with split tunneling, noting that Prime Video blocks the addresses VPN servers use. See IPVanish's strongest and weakest services.
  • Choose Private Internet Access for HBO Max, where it scores 100% in our research (October 2026), not for Disney+ (39%) or Netflix across all libraries (70%). It shows not enough data for BBC iPlayer (UK), Prime Video and Hulu (US). It offers Smart DNS with a choice of country and allows unlimited devices at once.
  • In our research (October 2026), CyberGhost scores 88% with Hulu (US), its best, and 33% with BBC iPlayer (UK) and 35% with Disney+. Its Amazon listing promises you will "never see another 'not available in your region' warning again".

Refund windows differ by VPN, and several services changed their plans or terms in 2026

Most of the VPNs we cover offer a 30-day refund, and four companies changed their services or terms in 2026.

First-term prices and refunds: most VPNs offer 30 days

The table shows each VPN's cheapest first-term (introductory) offer as an EU visitor saw it on 6 October 2026, with renewal prices where recorded. IPVanish showed US dollars, and Surfshark's renewal price was not captured.

ExpressVPN, NordVPN, Surfshark, Proton VPN, IPVanish and Private Internet Access offer 30-day money-back guarantees, some only for new customers, first purchases or website purchases. CyberGhost gives 45 days on plans of six months or longer.

No free VPN plan among the seven we cover suits regular streaming

Proton VPN is the only one of the seven VPNs we cover that documents a free plan, and Proton says streaming support needs a paid plan. For Netflix it says to use a paid plan and connect to a Plus server. To try a VPN first, use a money-back guarantee or the 7-day trials from NordVPN (1- and 2-year plans, 15 countries) and Surfshark (12- and 24-month plans).

Where to go next

Quick questions

Which VPN works with the most streaming services?
ExpressVPN, in our research (October 2026). It scores 95% or more with BBC iPlayer (UK), Prime Video, Disney+, HBO Max and Hulu (US), and 78% for Netflix across all libraries. NordVPN scores 94% or more with the same five services and 69% for Netflix overall, though its Netflix US score (87%) is the highest Netflix US score we have.
Is there a good free VPN for streaming?
No, not among the seven VPNs we cover. Proton VPN is the only one that documents a free plan, and Proton says streaming support needs a paid plan. For Netflix it says to use a paid plan and connect to a Plus server.
Does Prime Video work with a VPN?
Yes, with some. In our research (October 2026), ExpressVPN scores 95% with Prime Video, NordVPN and Surfshark 94%, Proton VPN 85% and IPVanish 67%. Amazon's terms, updated on 26 August 2026, say users "may not use any technology or technique to obscure or disguise" their location.
Which VPN is best for streaming abroad?
ExpressVPN. It is first in our streaming ranking, with 8.9/10. In our research (October 2026), it scores 95% or more with five of the six main services. Abroad, connect to a server in the country whose catalog you want. Netflix says its catalog follows the country you are in, except for a limited period inside the EU, and BBC iPlayer says it checks for a UK internet address.
Does Disney+ work with a VPN?
Yes, with some. ExpressVPN, NordVPN and IPVanish score 99% for Disney+ in our research (October 2026), Surfshark 88% and Proton VPN 73%, while Private Internet Access scores 39% and CyberGhost 35%. Disney+ error 73 tells anyone using a VPN or similar method to disable it, and its US terms forbid obscuring your location.
