The best Firestick VPNs compared
As of 14 October 2026, ExpressVPN is first in our ranking of six VPNs for a Fire TV Stick. Fire TV Sticks run one of two systems. Three run Vega OS: the Fire TV Stick 4K Select (2025), the Fire TV Stick HD (2026) and the Fire TV Stick 4K 3rd Gen (2026). The other sticks in Amazon's list run Fire OS.
All seven VPNs we cover have a Fire OS app. Five have a Vega OS app, and three of those lack some features. Amazon says Vega OS sticks take Appstore apps only, so a VPN with no Vega OS app cannot be added in the normal way. Check which system your stick runs before you choose.

Best VPNs for a Fire TV Stick, in ranking order
ExpressVPN comes first in our Fire TV ranking, then Proton VPN, Surfshark, NordVPN and IPVanish, with CyberGhost sixth. Private Internet Access is not ranked: there is not enough research data for it. For Netflix US alone NordVPN scores highest (87%), and for Netflix UK Proton VPN does (91%).
The score combines how well each VPN works in practice in our research, device compatibility, features, and price and refunds. On a Fire TV Stick, device support weighs more, so a Vega OS app that lists no missing features counts for more. How we rank explains how rankings work on this site. Our research scores are dated October 2026 and cover Netflix (US and UK), Prime Video and BBC iPlayer on any device. Three terms come up in the cards:
- A kill switch blocks internet traffic if the VPN drops.
- Split tunneling sends chosen apps outside the VPN.
- Auto-connect turns the VPN on by itself when the stick starts or joins a network.
1. ExpressVPN: best overall
Ranked first of the 6 VPNs with a Fire TV app and enough research data
- Vega OS app lists no missing features
- Our research: 95% Prime Video, 100% iPlayer
- Apps for both Fire OS and Vega OS
- No auto-connect documented for Fire OS
- Netflix US: 80% in our research
- Fire TV app
- Yes
- Devices at once
- 10
- Money-back
- 30 days
- Vega OS app
- Yes

Why it's here. ExpressVPN's apps cover both systems, and its Vega OS app lists no missing features. In our research it scores 80% or more with Netflix (US and UK), Prime Video and BBC iPlayer. We rank it narrowly ahead of Proton VPN.
Who it's for. ExpressVPN suits a new Vega OS stick, or anyone who wants one provider for both systems.
Who should look elsewhere. Netflix US is its lowest score at 80% in our research, close to Proton VPN (81%) but below NordVPN (87%). Nothing we read documents auto-connect or a kill switch in its Fire OS app, though it documents both in its Android TV app.
2. Proton VPN: best for UK streaming
- Vega OS app lists no missing features
- Netflix UK: 91% in our research, best of six
- Android TV app can auto-connect at start-up
- Free plan does not cover streaming
- Split tunneling is paid-only
- Fire TV app
- Yes, Fire OS 7 or later
- Devices at once
- 10
- Money-back
- 30 days
- Vega OS app
- Yes

Why it's here. Proton VPN takes second place, narrowly behind ExpressVPN. Its Vega OS app, launched as version 1.0 on 16 September 2026, also lists no missing features. It has the highest Netflix UK score of the six, 91% in our research.
Who it's for. Proton VPN suits UK viewers and Vega OS owners. Its Android TV app, which Proton says is the one for Fire OS, can connect by itself at start-up.
Who should look elsewhere. The free plan does not cover streaming. Prime Video is 85% in our research, behind ExpressVPN, NordVPN and Surfshark. Its BBC iPlayer guide asks for a paid plan and a valid UK TV Licence.
3. Surfshark: best for many sticks
- One account, unlimited devices
- Android TV guide lists auto-connect, kill switch
- Our research: 94% Prime Video, 100% iPlayer
- Vega OS app: no kill switch or split tunneling
- Netflix: 76% US, 77% UK in research
- Fire TV app
- Yes, Fire OS 7 or later
- Devices at once
- Unlimited
- Money-back
- 30 days
- Vega OS app
- Limited, No kill switch or Bypasser; WireGuard only

Why it's here. We rank Surfshark third. One account allows unlimited devices, so it covers every stick in the house. It scores 94% with Prime Video and 100% with BBC iPlayer in our research.
Who it's for. Surfshark suits a home with several sticks on one plan. Its Android TV guide, which Surfshark says matches its Fire TV app, lists auto-connect, a kill switch and split tunneling.
Who should look elsewhere. On Vega OS, its app has no kill switch and no Bypasser (Surfshark's name for split tunneling), so it falls behind ExpressVPN and Proton VPN.
4. NordVPN: best for Netflix US
- Netflix US: 87% in our research, best of six
- Split tunneling and auto-connect on Fire OS
- Our research: 94% Prime Video, 100% iPlayer
- Vega OS app is missing some features
- Not on first- or second-generation sticks
- No kill switch documented on Fire TV
- Fire TV app
- Yes, Not on 1st/2nd-gen sticks or Basic Edition
- Devices at once
- 10
- Money-back
- 30 days
- Vega OS app
- Limited, Some features temporarily missing

Why it's here. NordVPN comes fourth. It has the highest Netflix US score of the six, 87% in our research, and NordVPN says some features are temporarily missing from its Vega OS app.
Who it's for. NordVPN suits a Netflix US viewer on a Fire OS stick. It documents auto-connect, and split tunneling to keep an app such as Prime Video off the VPN.
Who should look elsewhere. NordVPN says first- and second-generation sticks and the Basic Edition cannot run its app. Its Fire TV settings list shows no kill switch.
5. IPVanish: fits Netflix-only homes
- Netflix: 84% US, 85% UK in our research
- Unlimited devices for personal use
- Split tunneling on Fire OS
- Prime Video 67%, BBC iPlayer 62% in research
- Vega OS app lacks split tunneling
- Kill switch is a separate app, not in a store
- Fire TV app
- Yes, 2nd-gen stick or newer
- Devices at once
- Unlimited
- Money-back
- 30 days
- Vega OS app
- Limited, No split tunneling, protocol switching or launch at startup

Why it's here. We rank IPVanish fifth. It scores 84% with Netflix US and 85% with Netflix UK in our research. Its 67% with Prime Video and 62% with BBC iPlayer are the weakest of the top five.
Who it's for. IPVanish suits a home that watches mostly Netflix and has a second-generation stick or newer, which its app requires.
Who should look elsewhere. On Vega OS, its app has no split tunneling, protocol switching or launch at startup. On Fire OS, its kill switch is a separate app that does not support second-generation sticks or older, and the startup reconnect can take five minutes or more.
6. CyberGhost: Fire OS sticks only
- Per-app split tunneling on Fire OS
- Auto-connect rules for chosen Wi-Fi networks
- 45-day money-back on longer plans
- No Vega OS app found
- BBC iPlayer: 33% in our research
- Netflix: 69% US, 70% UK in research
- Fire TV app
- Yes
- Devices at once
- 7
- Money-back
- 45 days
- Vega OS app
- No

Why it's here. CyberGhost is sixth because no Vega OS app was found for it. Its research scores trail the other five: 69% with Netflix US, 70% with Netflix UK and 33% with BBC iPlayer. Prime Video has too little data for a score, so we leave it out instead of counting it against CyberGhost.
Who it's for. CyberGhost suits an owner who already uses it on a Fire OS stick. Its 45-day refund window, for plans of 6 months or more, is the longest of the seven.
Who should look elsewhere. Skip it for a Vega OS stick. Buy on CyberGhost's website, not in the Fire TV app: plans bought through the Amazon Appstore fall outside its money-back guarantee.
Check whether your Fire TV runs Fire OS or Vega OS
Open Settings › My Fire TV › About (or Device & Software › About) and read the software version. Amazon lists Vega OS as version 1.1 or 2.0 and Fire OS as 7 or 8, so a version that starts with 1 or 2 is a Vega OS stick.
| System | Fire TV Sticks | What it means for a VPN |
|---|---|---|
| Vega OS 1.1 or 2.0 | 4K Select (2025), HD (2026), 4K 3rd Gen (2026) | Appstore apps only |
| Fire OS 8 | 4K Plus (2025), 4K Max 2nd Gen (2023), 4K 2nd Gen (2023) | Appstore apps and sideloading |
| Fire OS 7 | HD (2024), 4K Max 1st Gen (2021), 3rd Gen (2020), Lite (2020) | Appstore apps and sideloading |
Source: Amazon developer device specifications. Checked October 2026.
A "Fire TV Stick 4K" is on Fire OS 8 in its 2023 model and on Vega OS 2.0 in its 2026 model. Nothing we read from Amazon says existing Fire OS sticks will move to Vega OS.
Which VPN apps install on Fire OS and on Vega OS
On Fire OS sticks, all seven providers we cover have an Amazon Appstore app. On Vega OS sticks, five do: ExpressVPN, Proton VPN, Surfshark, NordVPN and IPVanish.
- App in the Amazon Appstore
- App with features the provider lists as missing
- No app
- Not documented by the provider

Private Internet Access lists its app as not currently compatible with Vega OS, and no CyberGhost Vega OS app was found. XDA Developers reported that NordVPN's and IPVanish's apps arrived several weeks after the Fire TV Stick 4K Select launched.
Older sticks have minimums on Fire OS:
- NordVPN: not on first- or second-generation sticks or the Basic Edition.
- IPVanish: a second-generation stick or newer.
- Proton VPN and Surfshark: Fire OS 7 or later.
- ExpressVPN, CyberGhost and Private Internet Access: Fire OS 6 or later.
If no VPN app installs on your stick, put the VPN on your home router instead. Router makers say it covers every connected device, including TVs with no app, and some ASUS and TP-Link routers let you choose which devices use it. The router section of our devices hub has the details, and VPN for your device covers other TVs.
Vega OS VPN apps leave some features out
Three of the five Vega OS apps do less than their Fire OS versions, according to the providers, and our Fire TV score counts those gaps. ExpressVPN and Proton VPN list none, so they are the two to start with on a Vega OS stick.
| Provider | What the provider lists as missing on Vega OS |
|---|---|
| Surfshark | Kill switch and Bypasser (its split tunneling). WireGuard is its only connection method. |
| IPVanish | Split tunneling, protocol switching and launch at startup. |
| NordVPN | Some features are "temporarily" missing. |
| ExpressVPN | No missing features listed. |
| Proton VPN | No missing features listed. |

How to install a VPN on a Fire TV Stick in five steps
You install a VPN on any current Fire TV Stick from the Amazon Appstore, on Fire OS and Vega OS alike:
- On the home screen, go to Find (Search on the newer home screen) and type your VPN's name.
- Select the official app, check that its "Works With" section lists your stick, then select Get.
- Open the app and sign in, usually with a QR code or a code you confirm on your phone.
- When a connection request appears, select OK. On Vega OS the button can say Continue or Allow.
- Pick a server from the app's location list, in the country whose catalog you want, not with the one-press button. Then play a title and check that the VPN is on, because IPVanish says a Fire OS stick shows no VPN icon.
The install guide has each provider's sign-in screens and the Vega OS setup. Sideloading means installing from outside the store, and it works on Fire OS. On Vega OS, Amazon says only Appstore apps can be downloaded. Its developer mode can sideload apps for testing, but it needs an Amazon Developer Account and command-line tools.
How each VPN scores with Netflix, Prime Video and BBC iPlayer
In our research (October 2026), the five VPNs at the top score 76% or more with Netflix US and Netflix UK. With Prime Video and BBC iPlayer, four of them score 85% or more, and IPVanish is lower. For each Netflix country, see which VPNs work with Netflix.
| VPN | Netflix (US) | Netflix (UK) | Prime Video (all libraries) | BBC iPlayer (UK) |

Source: whatworks.tech research, October 2026. Each score sums up the recent evidence we gathered for one VPN and one library; 100% means all of it says the VPN works. “Not enough data” means fewer than three recent sources.
Free VPNs on a Fire Stick: one plan, and it is limited
Proton VPN is the only one of the seven VPNs we cover that documents a free plan. Proton says streaming needs a paid plan, so it does not suit regular streaming on a Firestick.
| VPN | Free plan or trial | Refund terms |
|---|---|---|
| Proton VPN | Free plan; Proton says its Android TV app, the one for Fire OS, runs on it, but streaming needs a paid plan | 30 days |
| Surfshark | 7-day website trial on 12- and 24-month plans, limited to 3 devices | 30 days |
| NordVPN | 7-day trial on 1- and 2-year plans in 15 countries, with a card or PayPal | 30 days |
| IPVanish | 7-day trial on yearly plans bought in its phone app | 30 days, first-time annual or longer plans only |
| ExpressVPN, CyberGhost, Private Internet Access | None documented for Fire TV | ExpressVPN 30 days, CyberGhost 45 days on plans of 6 months or more, PIA 30 days |
Source: provider help pages. Refunds apply to website purchases, and some only to new customers. Nothing we read documents a free plan or trial for the last three on Fire TV, though CyberGhost says new users may be able to start a 3-day trial in its Android TV app. Checked October 2026.
When the VPN does not work on Fire TV
Three causes are worth checking first: no app for your stick, a service that spotted the VPN server, or a slow route. For the second, ExpressVPN, NordVPN and Surfshark suggest another server, and NordVPN says in the same country. For the third, Proton VPN also says to try another server in the same country.
| What you see | Why it happens | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The VPN app is not in the Appstore, or will not install | No app for your stick's system, or the stick is older than the provider's minimum | Check which apps install, see the install problems list, or use a home router |
| The app opens but will not connect | Fire OS shows a permission prompt the first time a VPN app connects, and the provider guides say to accept it | Open the app, connect again and accept the prompt (OK on Fire OS; on Vega OS the button can say Continue or Allow) |
| Netflix says "You seem to be using a VPN or proxy" (E106), or shows the wrong catalog | Netflix spotted the VPN server, or the app or profile kept the old region | Force-close Netflix after you move to a different server in the same country (on Fire OS: Settings › Applications › Manage Installed Applications, Netflix, Force Stop), as ExpressVPN advises. If the catalog stays wrong, create a new Netflix profile, as NordVPN advises. See the Netflix proxy error fix |
| BBC iPlayer says it only works in the UK | iPlayer sees your connection as outside the UK | Connect to another UK server, as ExpressVPN's BBC iPlayer guide advises. See the best VPN for BBC iPlayer and the fixes for BBC iPlayer's UK message |
| Prime Video stops playing with the VPN on | Prime Video checks your location and may have spotted the VPN server | ExpressVPN advises a server in your Amazon account's country. On Fire OS, split tunneling can keep Prime Video off the VPN |
| The VPN is off after the stick restarts | Auto-connect is a setting, and ExpressVPN documents it only for its Android TV app | Turn on the app's auto-connect setting. The install guide shows where each app keeps it |
| Streams buffer or look soft with the VPN on | A VPN adds overhead and a longer route. If your app uses WireGuard, its headers take up to about 5% of each full-size packet. Nothing we read measures the total | Connect to another server in the same country. For 4K, keep your speed above the figure each service asks for: Netflix asks 15 Mbps and Amazon's Fire TV 4K page says 20, so 20 Mbps meets both |

Quick questions
- Does a VPN work on the new Fire TV Sticks with Vega OS?
- You can, if the provider has a Vega OS app. ExpressVPN, Proton VPN, Surfshark, NordVPN and IPVanish do, but only ExpressVPN's and Proton VPN's list no missing features. ExpressVPN reports that a few DNS lookups skip the VPN on every Vega OS app. Private Internet Access says its app is not currently compatible, and no CyberGhost app was found. Amazon says Vega OS takes Appstore apps only.
- Does ExpressVPN work on a Firestick?
- Yes. ExpressVPN has an Amazon Appstore app for Fire OS 6 and later, plus a file you can sideload on Fire OS, and a separate Vega OS app. ExpressVPN leads our Fire TV ranking with 9.1/10. In our research (October 2026, any device), it scores 95% with Prime Video, 100% with BBC iPlayer and 80% with Netflix US.
- Does NordVPN work on a Firestick?
- Yes, on most sticks. NordVPN has a Fire TV app in the Amazon Appstore and a Vega OS app, which it says is temporarily missing some features. NordVPN says first- and second-generation sticks and the Basic Edition cannot run its app. NordVPN is fourth in our Fire TV ranking with 8.0/10, and scores 87% with Netflix US in our research (October 2026, any device).
- Is there a free VPN for Firestick that works?
- Not for streaming, among the seven VPNs we cover. Proton VPN documents the only free plan, and it has a Fire TV app, but Proton says streaming needs a paid plan. NordVPN, Surfshark and IPVanish each give a 7-day trial on some plans, and all seven list a money-back guarantee on website purchases, usually 30 days.
- Can I use split tunneling on a Firestick?
- Yes, on Fire OS sticks with most providers. NordVPN, CyberGhost, Private Internet Access and IPVanish document split tunneling in their Fire TV apps, so you can route one app, such as Prime Video, outside the VPN. Proton VPN (paid plans) and Surfshark document it in their Android TV apps, which they say match their Fire OS apps. On Vega OS sticks, IPVanish and Surfshark list it as missing.
- Why is my VPN not working on my Fire TV Stick?
- Three causes are worth checking first: no app for your stick's system, a streaming service that spotted the VPN server, or a slow route. For the second, ExpressVPN, NordVPN and Surfshark suggest another server, and NordVPN says in the same country. Proton VPN says the same for a slow route. If the app will not install, check whether your stick runs Vega OS.
How we rank
We score every VPN on four things: how well it works with the main streaming services in our research, which collects published results from reviewers, trackers and users; whether it has an app for the device; its features; and its price and refund terms. The Fire TV score out of 10 weighs them for this device, and only VPNs with an app for it and enough research data are ranked. Commissions play no part in the ranking. Our full method.
