The short answer

Why does YouTube TV ask me to verify my location, and what should I do?

As of 19 October 2026, YouTube TV asks you to verify your location when it cannot correctly identify where your device is. If a VPN or proxy is on, turn it off first: YouTube TV says it blocks streaming. Then you usually finish the check on your phone at tv.youtube.com/verify, with location access allowed. Our research has too little data to name any VPN that works with YouTube TV.

Key takeaways

  • YouTube TV sends you to tv.youtube.com/verify when it cannot correctly identify your location, and on a TV you usually finish the check on a phone.
  • YouTube TV asks frequent travelers to use it in their home area every 3 months, and allows two home area changes in 12 months.
  • Inside the US you get local channels for where you are. YouTube TV says you cannot access any programs while traveling internationally.
  • YouTube TV says a VPN or proxy stops streaming, and we have too little research data to score any VPN with it.
  • NordVPN's own help page lists fixes but says YouTube TV on Android and iOS is not possible, because it needs the device's GPS.

As of 19 October 2026, YouTube TV shows its verify prompt when it cannot place your device in your area. In the US, update your current playback area, usually on your phone, and turn off any VPN or proxy first. When you travel internationally, YouTube TV says you cannot access any programs. YouTube TV's iPhone and iPad help names tv.youtube.com/settings/area instead of tv.youtube.com/verify.

YouTube TV's verify prompt is a location check that you usually finish on your phone

The verify prompt is a location check. If YouTube TV cannot correctly identify your location, its help says you will be asked to go to tv.youtube.com/verify and let the website use your device's location. YouTube TV says it checks your area to make sure you get the right networks for where you are.

The prompt can also appear at home. A guide on YouTube TV's community help site says you might see it if you travel a lot or have a specific internet provider. The guide names T-Mobile Home Internet, Verizon Home Internet and satellite internet as providers whose IP address, the number websites see for your connection, often changes location.

YouTube TV location check: how to fix it, quickest first

Start by turning off any VPN or proxy, then update your current playback area, usually on your phone. Most steps come from YouTube TV's help pages, and a step from another source says so. Stop as soon as YouTube TV plays.

Diagram of the main fixes below, drawn from YouTube TV's help pages. It shows steps, not data.
  1. Turn off any VPN and proxy, including one set up on your router, then reopen YouTube TV. A community guide adds ad blockers. Check: the video plays or the prompt goes away.
  2. On your phone, turn on location for your browser and for YouTube TV. On Android, go to Settings › Apps and Notifications › YouTube TV › Permissions › Location. On an iPhone, use Settings › Privacy › Location Services. Check: the permission is on.
  3. On the TV, open the YouTube TV app, select your profile photo, then Location › Current Playback Area. The iPhone and iPad help gives Settings › Area › Current Playback Area instead. Check: the TV prompts you to finish on a phone or in a browser.
  4. On your phone, open tv.youtube.com/verify and allow the website to use your location. The iPhone and iPad help names tv.youtube.com/settings/area instead. Check: the TV shows your current location.
  5. Optional: if you see "Turn on browser location permissions" or "Area update unavailable", Google's help for YouTube Primetime Channels, a separate product, says to use a phone and not a computer, reopen the YouTube app on the TV and clear the phone's cache and cookies. Check: the area updates.
  6. Turn the TV and the router off for 30 seconds, update the YouTube TV app, then reinstall it. Clearing your browser's cache and cookies may also help. Check: the prompt does not come back.
  7. If the update still fails, contact YouTube TV support. A community guide says the prompts end in an option to chat online. Check: support confirms your area.

  • YouTube TV asks frequent travelers to use it in their home area at least once every 3 months, to keep the correct local networks. It asks MLB fans to do so every 30 days, to avoid MLB viewing restrictions.
  • To change the home area, open tv.youtube.com in a browser, select your profile photo, then Location, then Update next to "Home area". A guide on YouTube TV's community help site says to change it only when you permanently move or are away from home for more than 90 days, and to contact support if you have already changed it twice in the past 12 months and need to again.
  • Nothing we read from YouTube TV says how it records home use or what happens if you skip it.

YouTube TV works across the US with local channels from where you are, and not abroad

Inside the US, YouTube TV keeps working while you travel, but the local channels follow your location. When you travel internationally, YouTube TV says you cannot access any programs.

YouTube TV says a VPN or proxy stops streaming, and we cannot score any VPN with it

YouTube TV says that if you use a VPN or proxy, you cannot stream, and it tells you to turn it off. A VPN or proxy sends your connection through another server.

A guide on YouTube TV's community help site says a VPN or ad blocker might cause issues setting your location. YouTube TV may verify your area through your device's location, and ExpressVPN's position is that some services read your device's GPS, Wi-Fi and cellular signals as well as your IP address, and can block you when they disagree.

NordVPN not working with YouTube TV: what NordVPN, ExpressVPN and Proton say

NordVPN's help page describes the problem as "You can't watch YouTube TV while connected to NordVPN". It says streaming YouTube TV on Android and iOS is not possible, because certain live content needs the device's GPS location.

It also lists these fixes. They are NordVPN's instructions, not a promise that YouTube TV will play:

  • Choose another server in the same country.
  • Clear the cache.
  • Turn off third-party web protection and Secure DNS, a browser setting also called DNS over HTTPS.

NordVPN documents app split tunneling in its Windows, Android, Android TV and Fire OS apps. Split tunneling sends some traffic through the VPN and lets other traffic go direct, so one reading is to leave the YouTube TV app off the VPN while other apps stay on it. That is the same as turning the VPN off for YouTube TV, and it is not a way round the location check.

ExpressVPN's help page for U.S. users, updated 15 October 2026, says your server should match the country you are in. Proton VPN's page is a how-to that says streaming needs a paid plan. These are the providers' own instructions, not a sign that YouTube TV plays on a VPN.

The table below is our general streaming ranking, not a YouTube TV ranking, because we have no YouTube TV research scores. NordVPN is second in it, at 8.7/10 as of 14 October 2026, and NordVPN's streaming profile lists its apps and features.

YouTube TV still asks to verify with no VPN on: check the connection, then ask support

With no VPN on, YouTube TV can still ask. The community guide quoted above says some home internet and satellite providers often change the location of your IP address. MaxMind, which sells IP-location data, says a mobile network that gives one address to a wide area limits how precisely that address can be placed. A VPN you forgot about can also be the cause, since router makers describe a router VPN as covering every device behind it, TVs included. Where a router VPN is set is covered in our devices hub's router section.

Our IP address check shows the address and location a website gets from you, and Is my VPN working shows whether a site still sees a VPN.

If nothing works, contact YouTube TV support. A community guide says the prompts end in an option to chat online.

Quick questions

Why does YouTube TV keep asking me to verify my location?
YouTube TV asks when it cannot correctly identify your location, and sends you to tv.youtube.com/verify to allow your device's location. A guide on YouTube TV's community help site says frequent travel, or an internet provider that often changes your IP address location, can trigger it. It adds that a VPN or ad blocker might cause issues setting your location.
What is tv.youtube.com/settings/area?
It is the address YouTube TV's iPhone and iPad help gives for the location check and for finishing a playback-area update. The computer and Android versions give tv.youtube.com/verify. YouTube's Primetime Channels help, a separate YouTube product, also gives it as the browser page for changing the Home area.
Why is NordVPN not working with YouTube TV, and can I use any VPN?
YouTube TV says a VPN or proxy stops it from playing, so we cannot confirm that any VPN works with it. NordVPN's help page describes the same symptom, and says YouTube TV on Android and iOS is not possible because it needs the device's GPS. In our research (October 2026), there is too little data to score NordVPN or any other VPN with YouTube TV.
Does YouTube TV work outside the US, in Canada or Mexico?
No, YouTube TV says. It says you can't access any programs on it while traveling internationally, and that it is available in the United States. The YouTube TV help pages we read do not name Canada or Mexico. Both are outside the United States, so we read the rule as covering them. It also says a VPN or proxy stops it from playing.
How many times can I change my YouTube TV home area?
Twice in 12 months, and only while you are in the new home area, YouTube TV says. A guide on its community help site adds that you should change it only when you permanently move or are away from home for more than 90 days. The guide says that if you have already changed it twice and need to again, you reach out to YouTube TV support.
