The best Google TV and Android TV VPNs compared
As of 13 October 2026, ExpressVPN is first among the seven VPNs we rank that have an Android TV app. Google TV is the home screen and Android TV OS is the system underneath it, so Google TV takes the Android TV apps from Google Play. The table shows our order, devices at once, money-back and router setup.

Our scores and the providers' own pages, 19 October 2026. Only VPNs with an Android TV app and enough research data are ranked.
On an Apple TV or a Fire TV Stick? Each has its own ranking: Apple TV and Fire TV.
Other devices are in VPN for your device. A Chromecast without Google TV takes no apps; see older Chromecasts.
ExpressVPN leads our Google TV ranking, and all seven VPNs run from Google Play
ExpressVPN leads, and every VPN here has a Google Play app. The score combines how well each VPN works in practice in our research, device compatibility, features, and price and refunds. Scores here are research scores from October 2026: Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+ and HBO Max across all libraries, BBC iPlayer for the UK, Hulu for the US.
1. ExpressVPN: best overall
Ranked first of the 7 VPNs with an Android TV app and enough research data
- Pick which apps use the VPN
- Kill switch built into the TV app
- Sign in by QR code, link or code
- Highest research score of the seven
- Kill switch is off until you turn it on
- Netflix is its weakest service (78%) in research
- Android TV app
- Yes
- Devices at once
- 10
- Money-back
- 30 days
- Router setup
- Yes

Why it's here. ExpressVPN comes first because five of its six research scores are 95% or higher, with 100% for BBC iPlayer, HBO Max and Hulu.
Who it's for. ExpressVPN fits a Chromecast with Google TV or an Android TV box where you want to choose which apps use the VPN. Its guide names Sony, TCL, Philips and NVIDIA SHIELD devices. Its split tunneling can send only the apps you pick through the VPN, and the company has a setup page for Chromecast with Google TV.
Who should look elsewhere. The kill switch, which cuts internet access if the VPN drops, is called Network protection and is off by default. Netflix is its weakest service.
2. Surfshark: best for households
- Unlimited devices on every plan
- Auto connect and kill switch on the TV
- Sign in with Google, QR code or code
- 100% with BBC iPlayer and Hulu in research
- Netflix: 64% in our research, joint lowest
- HBO Max score is only 75% in research
- No wired (Ethernet) support on some TVs
- Android TV app
- Yes
- Devices at once
- Unlimited
- Money-back
- 30 days
- Router setup
- Yes

Why it's here. Surfshark is second: its TV app has auto connect, a kill switch and a way to pick which apps use the VPN, and one account covers unlimited devices. BBC iPlayer, Hulu and Prime Video all score 94% or higher in our research.
Who it's for. Surfshark is for a home with many screens: one account covers every phone, laptop and TV with no connection limit.
Who should look elsewhere. Netflix viewers may prefer another VPN, because Surfshark is joint lowest in our research, level with CyberGhost. Surfshark says its app does not support Ethernet cable connections on Android TVs running Android 9 and 12.
3. NordVPN: strong all-rounder
- Lists SHIELD and Android TV devices as supported
- Auto-connect can be limited to Wi-Fi or Ethernet
- Exclude chosen apps from the VPN
- BBC iPlayer and HBO Max both 100% in research
- Netflix is weaker, at 69% in research
- No kill switch in its TV guide
- Fails on some low-end or uncertified boxes
- Android TV app
- Yes
- Devices at once
- 10
- Money-back
- 30 days
- Router setup
- Yes

Why it's here. NordVPN is third. Its TV guide says the app works on Nvidia Shield, Fire TV and any Android TV-based device, and five of its six research scores are 94% or higher. NordVPN has a stronger research record than Surfshark, but Surfshark's feature score is higher, with unlimited devices where NordVPN allows 10.
Who it's for. NordVPN works for a TV that moves between Wi-Fi and Ethernet, because auto-connect can be limited to all networks, Wi-Fi or Ethernet. The company also offers SmartDNS for TVs that cannot run the app.
Who should look elsewhere. NordVPN says its app shows "Device is not compatible" on some boxes without a hardware security chip, typically low-end or non-certified ones, and reinstalling usually does not help. Its TV guide lists no kill switch.
4. IPVanish: best for Netflix
- Best Netflix score of the seven in research
- Optional status dot on your TV screen
- No device limit for personal use
- Weak on BBC iPlayer and Prime Video in research
- No Android TV split tunneling documented
- Needs a box with true Android TV OS
- Android TV app
- Yes
- Devices at once
- Unlimited
- Money-back
- 30 days
- Router setup
- Yes

Why it's here. IPVanish is fourth overall and first on our Netflix ranking. Its Netflix result is the best of the seven, 83% across all libraries, and it scores 99% with Disney+.
Who it's for. IPVanish is for Netflix-first households that own a Chromecast with Google TV or a real Android TV box. It names the 4th-generation Chromecast with Google TV as supported, and its optional VPN Status Indicator shows a colored dot on the TV screen, even in other apps.
Who should look elsewhere. Pick another VPN if BBC iPlayer or Prime Video is your main service; for HBO Max there is not enough data. IPVanish says its TV app works properly only on a box running true Android TV OS, so cheaper boxes need the phone app. Its kill switch is a separate app.
5. Proton VPN: free app, paid streaming
- Free plan installs and runs on the TV
- Sign in by QR code or 8-digit code
- Include mode for split tunneling (paid)
- Strong with BBC iPlayer, Hulu and HBO Max
- Streaming needs a paid plan
- Weakest on Disney+ (73%) in research
- Needs Android 8 or later
- Android TV app
- Yes
- Devices at once
- 10
- Money-back
- 30 days
- Router setup
- Yes

Why it's here. Proton VPN is fifth: 100% with BBC iPlayer, 96% with Hulu and 95% with HBO Max in our research, but only 73% with Disney+.
Who it's for. Proton VPN is for someone who wants to try an app on the TV before paying. Its Android TV app installs and runs on the free plan, though Proton says streaming support is only on paid plans.
Who should look elsewhere. The app needs Android 8 or later, and split tunneling is a paid feature. Chromecast-only devices need Proton on a router.
6. Private Internet Access: thin research
- 100% with HBO Max in research
- Per-app VPN switch and start-up connect
- Unlimited devices
- 30-day money-back guarantee for new website subscribers
- Too little data for BBC iPlayer, Prime Video or Hulu
- Only 39% with Disney+ in research
- PIA says it may not work on every box
- Android TV app
- Yes
- Devices at once
- Unlimited
- Money-back
- 30 days
- Router setup
- Yes

Why it's here. Private Internet Access ranks sixth because its research scores are lower than those of the five VPNs above it: HBO Max is 100%, Netflix 70% and Disney+ 39%. BBC iPlayer, Prime Video and Hulu lack enough data, so they are left out of its score rather than counted against it.
Who it's for. PIA suits someone who mostly watches HBO Max. Per App Settings switches each app between the VPN and your normal connection, there is no device limit, and PIA names Google TV on its own page.
Who should look elsewhere. PIA's guide warns the app may not work on every Android TV box, and it lists no kill switch.
7. CyberGhost: weakest research record
- App Split Tunnel in the TV app
- Streaming tab of optimized servers
- Sign in with a 4-digit PIN
- Weak on BBC iPlayer (33%) and Disney+ (35%)
- Netflix: 64% in our research
- Too little data for Prime Video and HBO Max
- Android TV app
- Yes
- Devices at once
- 7
- Money-back
- 45 days
- Router setup
- Yes

Why it's here. CyberGhost is last in this ranking. It has an Android TV app, but in our research it scores 33% with BBC iPlayer and 35% with Disney+, against 88% for Hulu and 64% for Netflix. There is not enough data for Prime Video and HBO Max.
Who it's for. CyberGhost suits people who already pay for it and want its app on the TV. Existing users can log in with a 4-digit PIN, and new users may get a 3-day trial inside the app. Settings has App Split Tunnel in its VPN tab, and the Best Location screen has a Streaming tab of optimized servers.
Who should look elsewhere. It is not for BBC iPlayer or Disney+ viewers. Plans bought in the TV app are managed by Google Play and are not covered by its money-back guarantee.
Chromecast with Google TV and Android TV boxes take VPN apps; older Chromecasts do not
- Chromecast with Google TV, NVIDIA SHIELD and Google TV or Android TV sets take VPN apps from Google Play.
- Chromecasts without Google TV do not.
- Google ended Chromecast production in August 2024 and named the Google TV Streamer as its replacement. It runs Android TV OS and takes Google Play apps, but none of the VPN help pages we read names it.
| Device | System | VPN app on the device |
|---|---|---|
| Chromecast with Google TV (no longer made) | Google TV | Yes: ExpressVPN, IPVanish, PIA and Proton VPN name it |
| Google TV Streamer | Google TV on Android TV OS | Takes Google Play apps; no VPN page we read names it |
| Chromecast without Google TV | Cast only | No app: put the VPN on a router |
| NVIDIA SHIELD TV | Android 11 on Android TV | Yes, from Google Play |
| Sony, TCL, Hisense and Philips TVs | Google TV or Android TV, by model | Yes, from Google Play |
| A TV running neither (Roku TV, Samsung, LG) | Not covered here | None of the seven lists an app: put the VPN on a router |
Checked October 2026.
Proton, IPVanish and PIA tell owners of an older Chromecast to use a VPN router, and our router guide walks through the setup. CyberGhost's Android TV page lists NVIDIA Shield TV and Chromecast with Google TV under router setup, although its app is on Google Play.
Seven steps to set up a VPN on Google TV or Android TV
Install a VPN on Google TV from the Apps tab. Search for the VPN's name, install it, sign in with the code or QR code on screen, and connect to a server.
- Buy your plan from the VPN's own website, not in the TV app. ExpressVPN says refunds for app-store purchases come from Apple or Google, and PIA's and CyberGhost's guarantees exclude them.
- On Google TV, open the Apps tab and use the search. On Android TV, open Apps on the home screen and select the Google Play Store app.
- Search for the VPN's name and select Install.
- Open the app and sign in with a code or QR code, as the table below shows.
- Allow the VPN connection request Android shows; NordVPN and CyberGhost both call it a standard prompt.
- Pick a server in the country whose library you want to try.
- Turn on the app's start-up connection and, if it has one, its kill switch.
Then open the streaming app and check which library it shows. To test a server first, run our VPN check on a phone or computer connected to it.
| VPN | How you sign in on the TV |
|---|---|
| ExpressVPN | QR code, link and code, or email with password or activation code |
| Surfshark | Google account, QR code, login code from the phone app, or email |
| NordVPN | QR code, or a number entered on a phone or computer |
| IPVanish | Username and password, or QR code |
| Proton VPN | QR code, or an 8-digit code at protonvpn.com/tv |
| Private Internet Access | Type your PIA login with the remote |
| CyberGhost | 4-digit PIN, or username and password |
Checked October 2026.
If the Play Store is missing on your box, ExpressVPN and CyberGhost offer an APK (the app's install file) and advise taking it only from their own sites. AndroidTVNews describes the Chromecast with Google TV route at Settings › Apps › Security & Restrictions › Unknown sources, which is greyed out until Developer Options are on. Google Play Protect, on by default on Android TV, checks apps from other sources.
Common Google TV and Android TV VPN problems, and how to fix them
Providers, Netflix and Google document each problem below and its fix.
| What you see | Why it happens | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The VPN app is missing in Google Play, or says the device is not compatible | Google Play Help says the Play Store shows only apps compatible with your device. Proton VPN lists Android 8 or later, and ExpressVPN, Surfshark and CyberGhost list Android 7.0. IPVanish's app needs true Android TV OS, and NordVPN's fails on some boxes without a hardware security chip. | NordVPN advises installing the TV's system update (Settings › System › About › System update on Google TV, Settings › About › System software update on Android TV), then search Google Play again. If the app is still missing, put the VPN on a router. |
| Netflix shows error E106, or the wrong catalog | Netflix's help page documents E106 as its message for a VPN or proxy. For the wrong catalog, NordVPN says switching regions often can lock a profile to one region. | Switch to a different server in that country and force-close Netflix after each change, as ExpressVPN advises. If the catalog is still wrong, connect to your chosen server, create a new Netflix profile and clear the app's cache or data in Settings › Apps. |
| The internet drops, or the VPN will not connect, on an Ethernet cable | Proton says some Android TVs and boxes have a bug that drops Ethernet when a VPN connects. Surfshark's app does not support Ethernet on Android 9 and 12. | Switch to Wi-Fi, or install the system update. |
| The app sticks on Connecting or keeps dropping | Providers list the server, the connection type (protocol), the app version or network restrictions as causes. | Try another server, then another connection type under the app's Protocol setting, then reinstall. On Chromecast with Google TV, IPVanish says to clear its cache and data in Settings › Apps › IPVanish VPN. |
| The VPN is off after a restart | An app reconnects at start-up only when its start-up setting is on. | Turn on ExpressVPN's When Android starts up, PIA's Launch on System Startup, Proton's Auto-connect or Surfshark's Auto connect. |
| The sign-in screen shows no QR code, or the code fails | ExpressVPN says the QR option can go missing until the app's data is cleared. Proton's 8-digit code goes in at protonvpn.com/tv, not protonvpn.com. | ExpressVPN: long-press the app icon, then Info › Clear data. Proton: sign in at protonvpn.com/tv. |

Three of the seven VPNs name a mode that sends only chosen apps through the VPN
ExpressVPN, Surfshark and Proton VPN (paid plans) name a mode that sends only the apps you pick through the VPN, a feature called split tunneling.
| VPN | Split tunneling in the Android TV app |
|---|---|
| ExpressVPN | Three modes under Options › Settings › Split Tunneling: all apps, all but selected, or only selected |
| Surfshark | Bypasser, with a Bypass VPN mode and a Route via VPN mode |
| NordVPN | Excludes chosen apps from the VPN |
| Proton VPN | Exclude mode by default, or include mode; paid plans only |
| Private Internet Access | Per App Settings: a green lock uses the VPN, a red lock bypasses it |
| CyberGhost | App Split Tunnel, in the VPN tab of Settings |
| IPVanish | Not documented for Android TV in the pages we read |
Checked October 2026.
ExpressVPN and Proton VPN apply split-tunneling changes after the VPN reconnects. Proton says that on most platforms split tunneling cannot be used together with its kill switch.
A phone's VPN usually does not change what your Google TV streams when you cast
When a cast session hands playback to the TV, the TV fetches the stream itself, so the stream uses the TV's own connection, not the phone's VPN. Screen mirroring differs.
- ExpressVPN's page for older Chromecasts lists casting from Android with its VPN on as not supported and advises a VPN router. For a Chromecast with Google TV it says to run the app on the device.
- Surfshark and NordVPN say a VPN can hide your phone and TV from each other on the home network and block casting. Their fix on an Android phone is Discover on LAN (Surfshark) or Local network discovery (NordVPN), with both devices on the same Wi-Fi. Both also suggest an HDMI cable, which keeps the VPN on.
To change the location a streaming app sees, run the VPN on the TV itself or on a router.
Smart DNS on Google TV is a last resort, and it leaves your IP address unchanged
Smart DNS points your TV at a provider's DNS servers, the lookup service it uses to find websites. Your IP address stays the same and traffic stays unencrypted, and Google TV has an app route, so you rarely need it.
- Google TV Help documents no manual DNS steps. NordVPN's Android TV guide and a Smart DNS provider's Google TV guide set DNS through a static IP address.
- NordVPN and PIA still offer Smart DNS. ExpressVPN's MediaStreamer cannot change your location, CyberGhost says its Smart DNS no longer works with streaming services, and Surfshark ended its service.
Quick questions
- Can you put a VPN on Google TV?
- Yes, on devices that take Google Play apps. Google TV takes apps from Google Play, and all seven VPNs we rank have an Android TV app there. ExpressVPN, IPVanish, PIA and Proton VPN name Chromecast with Google TV; none of the help pages we read names the Google TV Streamer. A Chromecast without Google TV takes no apps, so the VPNs say to use a router.
- Does NordVPN work on Google TV, Chromecast and NVIDIA SHIELD?
- NordVPN says yes. Its guide says the app works on Nvidia Shield, Fire TV and any Android TV-based device, installs from Google Play and signs in by QR code, and Google TV runs on Android TV OS. NordVPN also says the app shows "Device is not compatible" on some low-end or non-certified boxes. Its casting guide says older Chromecasts need a VPN router.
- Does a VPN work on an older Chromecast?
- Not as an app. Chromecasts without Google TV do not run VPN apps, so Proton VPN, IPVanish and PIA say to put the VPN on a router, and IPVanish also lists sharing a connection from another device. Among Chromecasts, only Chromecast with Google TV takes an app.
- Is there a free VPN for Google TV?
- Yes, with limits. Proton VPN has a free plan, and its Android TV app runs on it, but Proton says streaming support needs a paid plan. To try a paid VPN, NordVPN (in 15 countries) and Surfshark offer 7-day trials on some plans, CyberGhost says new users may get a 3-day trial in its TV app, and most others give new customers a 30-day money-back guarantee.
- How do I sign in to a VPN on Google TV without typing a password?
- Use a QR code or an on-screen code. ExpressVPN, Surfshark, NordVPN, IPVanish and Proton VPN offer one. PIA needs you to type its login with the remote, and CyberGhost uses a 4-digit PIN for existing users.
- Does my phone's VPN cover what I cast to Google TV?
- Usually not. Google's Cast documentation says that when a session hands over playback, the TV brings the stream in from the streaming service, so a phone VPN does not carry it. ExpressVPN's page for older Chromecasts advises a VPN router; for a Chromecast with Google TV it says to run the app on the device.
How we rank
We score every VPN on four things: how well it works with the main streaming services in our research, which collects published results from reviewers, trackers and users; whether it has an app for the device; its features; and its price and refund terms. The Google TV score out of 10 weighs them for this device, and only VPNs with an app for it and enough research data are ranked. Commissions play no part in the ranking. Our full method.
