IPVanish, ExpressVPN and NordVPN lead our comparison of seven VPNs for Disney+
In our October 2026 research, IPVanish, ExpressVPN and NordVPN each score 99% with Disney+ across all its libraries, and Surfshark follows at 88%. A score of 100% means all the recent evidence we gathered says the VPN works. "All libraries" counts every country's Disney+ library together.
| Your situation | What applies |
|---|---|
| At home, and Disney+ shows error 73 with your VPN on | Try another server in the same country first, as NordVPN and ExpressVPN advise. If error 73 stays, turn the VPN off, as Disney+ says. With PIA (39%) or CyberGhost (35%), a different VPN may be the better fix. |
| Traveling with your own account | Disney+ help says you stream the library of the country you are in. |
| Wanting another country's library | Disney's US terms ban hiding your location, and each country's library depends on Disney's rights there. |

Our scores and the providers' own pages, 19 October 2026. Only VPNs with enough research data for Disney+ are ranked.
Our ranking: IPVanish leads seven VPNs for Disney+ in a close call with ExpressVPN
We rank IPVanish first at 9.7/10, a close call with ExpressVPN at 9.5/10, and NordVPN is third at 9.2/10. IPVanish, ExpressVPN and NordVPN share the same 99% research score from four sources each, so research does not separate them.
The score combines how well each VPN works in practice in our research, device compatibility, features, and price and refunds. How we rank explains how rankings work on this site. IPVanish sets no device limit, and only ExpressVPN's apps show no gaps in the pages we read. NordVPN's Vega OS app lacks some features, and Vega OS is the newer Amazon system, first on the Fire TV Stick 4K Select.
ExpressVPN leads our all-services streaming ranking; for Disney+ alone IPVanish is narrowly ahead. The ranking counts only each VPN's score across all Disney+ libraries. The US and UK library scores on this page are context, not part of it, and each rests on three or four sources.
1. IPVanish: best overall
Ranked first of the 7 VPNs with enough research data for Disney+
- Our research: 99% with Disney+
- No device cap for personal use
- Chosen apps can skip the VPN on Fire TV
- Refund needs a yearly website plan
- Vega OS app has fewer features
- Disney+ in our research
- 99%
- Devices at once
- Unlimited
- Money-back
- 30 days
- Router setup
- Yes

Why it's here. IPVanish ranks first at 9.7/10, a close call with ExpressVPN. Disney+ is among the services where IPVanish scores best.
Who it's for. A household that also uses the VPN on phones and laptops suits IPVanish, since it sets no device limit. It also offers split tunneling (keeping chosen apps outside the VPN) on Android and on Fire OS, the older Fire TV system.
Who should look elsewhere. IPVanish's money-back guarantee needs a first-time yearly or longer plan from its website, and its Vega OS app has fewer features. We could not read an IPVanish help page for Disney+, while NordVPN, ExpressVPN, Surfshark and Proton VPN each publish one.
2. ExpressVPN: best for TVs and routers
- Our research: 99% with Disney+
- Aircove routers for TVs with no app
- ExpressVPN's Disney+ page updated 15 October 2026
- Device cap: 10 on the Basic tier
- Disney+ in our research
- 99%
- Devices at once
- 10
- Money-back
- 30 days
- Router setup
- Yes

Why it's here. ExpressVPN ranks second at 9.5/10 and shares the 99% research score. Its TV apps, including the one for Vega OS, show no feature gaps in the pages we read, unlike IPVanish's and NordVPN's Vega OS apps.
Who it's for. ExpressVPN fits a TV-first household: its own Aircove routers cover TVs that have no VPN app. Its Disney+ page (updated 15 October 2026) gives US servers to try one after another. Its plan tiers allow 10, 12 or 14 devices, a cap that IPVanish does not set.
3. NordVPN: also 99%, with Disney+ help
- Our research: 99% with Disney+
- Help page of fixes written for Disney+
- Fire TV, Android TV and Apple TV apps
- Vega OS app lacks some features
- Cap of 10 devices
- Disney+ in our research
- 99%
- Devices at once
- 10
- Money-back
- 30 days
- Router setup
- Yes

Why it's here. NordVPN ranks third at 9.2/10 and shares the 99% research score. Its US library score is 98% and its UK library score 100%, both outside the ranking. NordVPN's scores for each service show the rest.
Who it's for. NordVPN's Disney+ help page lists fixes in order, from a DNS leak test and another server in the same country to a cleared app cache. It adds that a South Africa or MENA subscription plays only that region's library. NordVPN caps you at 10 devices, and its Vega OS app lacks some features.
4. Surfshark: unlimited devices, mid-table score
- Unlimited devices on every plan
- Help page for Disney+
- Fire TV, Android TV and Apple TV apps
- 88% across all Disney+ libraries
- Vega OS app has core features only
- Disney+ in our research
- 88%
- Devices at once
- Unlimited
- Money-back
- 30 days
- Router setup
- Yes

Why it's here. Surfshark ranks fourth at 8.9/10. Across all libraries it scores 88% in our research, below the top three. Its US library score, 99%, is outside the ranking and rests on three sources.
Who it's for. Choose it if you have many screens, since it allows unlimited devices on every plan. Its help page adds that you need a separate Disney+ subscription.
Who should look elsewhere. Surfshark's own guide warns that a router setup drops most app features, and its Vega OS app covers core functions only.
5. Proton VPN: paid plan, mid-range score
- Help page lists fixes for Disney+ errors
- TV apps on four systems
- 73% across all Disney+ libraries
- Streaming needs a paid plan
- Plus covers 10 devices
- Disney+ in our research
- 73%
- Devices at once
- 10
- Money-back
- 30 days
- Router setup
- Yes

Why it's here. Proton VPN ranks fifth at 7.8/10, with 73% across all libraries from five sources. Its TV apps cover Apple TV, Android TV, Fire OS and Vega OS, though its Apple TV App Store description still says support is not yet available.
Who it suits. Pick it only if you already pay for Proton VPN Plus or Unlimited, since Proton says streaming needs a paid plan. If the highest score matters most, start with the first three.
6. Private Internet Access: low score, unlimited devices
- Unlimited simultaneous connections
- Smart DNS by country, for TVs with no VPN app
- 30-day refund on website purchases
- 39% with Disney+ in our research
- App does not support Vega OS
- Disney+ in our research
- 39%
- Devices at once
- Unlimited
- Money-back
- 30 days
- Router setup
- Yes

Why it's here. Private Internet Access ranks sixth at 6.0/10. Its 39% across all libraries, from three sources, is the second-lowest of the seven. It has apps for Fire OS, Android TV and Apple TV, but PIA says its app does not currently work on Vega OS.
Who it suits. PIA suits a large home that also watches services where it scores higher: in our research it scores 100% with HBO Max and 70% with Netflix across all libraries. It allows unlimited devices and offers Smart DNS (a DNS service for TVs that cannot run a VPN app) by country. Smart DNS does not encrypt your traffic, and PIA's research score covers its VPN, not Smart DNS.
7. CyberGhost: lowest Disney+ score
- 45-day money-back window on 6-month plans or longer
- Says it checks its Disney+ servers daily
- 35% with Disney+ in our research
- No Apple TV app
- Cap of 7 devices
- Disney+ in our research
- 35%
- Devices at once
- 7
- Money-back
- 45 days
- Router setup
- Yes

Why it's here. CyberGhost is last at 4.9/10. Its 35% across all libraries, from three sources, is the lowest of the seven. Its apps cover Fire OS and Android TV, but there is no Apple TV app and we found none for Vega OS.
Who it suits. CyberGhost says it has streaming-optimized servers for Disney+ in the US and Italy, checked daily by its IT team. It gives the longest money-back window of the seven, 45 days when you buy a plan of six months or longer, which leaves time to try a server first. Choose another VPN if Disney+ must work every time.
Set up a VPN for Disney+ in six steps
Connect to a server once the VPN app is installed, then open the official Disney+ app. Providers give different advice on the server country, and Disney's US terms ban hiding your location:
- ExpressVPN's Disney+ page says to match the country you are in.
- Surfshark's Disney+ page says your home country or the region where you are based.
- CyberGhost's Disney+ page says your home country when you travel, and calls connecting to another country's library against its terms.
- Purchase the plan through the VPN's own website rather than an app store; several providers leave app-store purchases out of refunds.
- Install the VPN app on every device you watch on and sign in. Our Fire TV install guide has the steps for a Fire TV Stick.
- Connect to a server. The list above shows what each provider says about the country.
- Open the official Disney+ app and sign in. If Disney+ asks you to confirm you are away from home, follow the prompt.
- If error 73 shows or the video will not load, close the app and connect to another server in the same country. NordVPN and ExpressVPN both advise this.
- Open our VPN working check to confirm the address your device shows.
Disney+ error 73 and other location or VPN messages: what they mean and what to do
Disney+ error 73 means the app will not play the title from the location it sees, with or without a VPN. The message says "This content isn't available to watch in your current location". Disney+ names two causes: using it from a country where it is unavailable, and using a VPN or IP anonymizer (a tool that hides your IP address).
In our research the seven VPNs score from 35% to 99% with Disney+, so a low-scoring VPN is the likelier problem. CyberGhost says Disney+ blocks VPNs, so your address may be flagged, and NordVPN and ExpressVPN both advise another server. Try these fixes in order:
- Close the app, connect to another server in the same country and reopen it. NordVPN and ExpressVPN advise this.
- Log out of Disney+, restart the device and log in again, as ExpressVPN advises.
- Clear the app cache. On an iPhone or iPad, reinstall the app instead, as NordVPN advises.
- Turn the VPN off and reopen Disney+, as Disney+ says. If the title plays, the VPN connection was the trigger. If not, run Disney+'s connection test and restart the device and the app.
| What you see | Why it happens | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| "This content isn't available to watch in your current location" (error 73) | Disney+ does not accept your location or the VPN. | Try another server in the same country and restart the app. If it still fails, turn the VPN off, as Disney+ says. With PIA (39%) or CyberGhost (35%), a different VPN may be the better fix. |
| Error 73 with no VPN on | Disney+ names two causes: your location, or an IP anonymizer. MaxMind says mobile networks that share one address over a large area are located less precisely. Disney+ does not say which location data it uses. | Turn off any proxy or privacy tool. Try home Wi-Fi instead of mobile data, run Disney+'s connection test, then restart the device and the app. If it persists, contact Disney+ support. |
| A prompt to confirm you are away from home | Disney+ help says that abroad you may be asked to confirm this. | Follow the prompt. In the EU or EEA, Disney+'s Italy help page says to verify your home country before you travel, through live support. |
| The title you want is missing | Libraries vary with rights and location. Abroad, Disney+ shows the library of the country you are in. | Look for the title in the country you are in. In Disney+'s EU help edition, EU subscribers keep their home library inside the EU or EEA. |
| Live content asks for location access | Disney's US agreement says live content access is generally set by your device's location. | Allow the prompt where you may watch. For ordinary playback with a VPN, NordVPN lists turning location services off as a fix. |
| Video buffers or drops in quality | Disney+ recommends 5.0 Mbps for HD and 25.0 Mbps for 4K UHD. | Check your speed with the VPN on. |

Disney+ works abroad, but you stream the library of the country you are in
Yes, you can use Disney+ abroad, with limits. Disney+ help says that outside your home country you stream what is available where you are. It may ask you to confirm you are away from home. So with a US account in a country where Disney+ is offered, you see that country's library, not the US one.
| Where you travel | What Disney+ says |
|---|---|
| Inside the EU, Norway, Liechtenstein or Iceland, on an EU subscription | You keep the home-country version of Disney+. This appears in the EU help edition only. |
| A US subscription | The US agreement covers Disney+ bought in the US and used where Disney+ is offered. Hulu and ESPN are US-only. |
| Where Disney+ is offered | Disney's November 2025 earnings release says more than 150 countries and territories outside the U.S. |
Source: Disney+ Help Center (US and Italy editions), the US subscriber agreement and Disney's earnings release. Checked October 2026.
Disney+ libraries differ by country because Disney's US agreement says content varies with rights and your location. CyberGhost warns that you may get a different library or none at all. Plans and prices differ by country too.
Outside the US, Hulu is a content hub inside Disney+, and our Hulu page covers it. The streaming VPN hub compares how other services treat travelers.
Disney+ terms ban hiding your location, and nothing we read says how it spots a VPN
Disney's US agreement (updated 17 October 2025) bars any "technology or technique to obscure or disguise your location". It also says live content access is generally set by your device's location, and you may be asked to share it. The Canadian agreement bars the same. Nothing we read from Disney describes how it spots a VPN: its agreement says only that it may use different technologies to verify your location.
Disney+ runs on most TVs, but none of the seven VPNs lists an app for Roku, Samsung or LG
Disney+'s US help lists Fire TV, Apple TV (4th generation and later), Android TV, Roku, LG, Samsung, Vizio, game consoles and browsers. Not every one of these has a VPN app:
- Apple TV: ExpressVPN, NordVPN, Surfshark, Proton VPN, IPVanish and PIA have an app, and CyberGhost does not. Our Apple TV ranking has the details.
- Fire TV: all seven have a Fire OS app. Five also have a Vega OS app, three of them with documented gaps. PIA says its app does not currently work on Vega OS, and we found none for CyberGhost. Our Fire TV ranking compares them.
- Google TV and Android TV: Google Play carries an app from all seven. Our Google TV ranking lists the limits.
- Roku, Samsung and LG TVs: none of the seven VPNs lists an app for them, so the route is a router with a VPN client or a second device.
Disney+ recommends 5.0 Mbps for HD and 25.0 Mbps for 4K UHD. In its Italian help edition, Disney+ says 4K is not available in computer browsers, which are limited to 720p.
Quick questions
- Does Disney+ work with a VPN?
- Yes, with the right VPN. In our October 2026 research, IPVanish, ExpressVPN and NordVPN score 99% across all Disney+ libraries, Surfshark 88%, Proton VPN 73%, Private Internet Access 39% and CyberGhost 35%. Disney+ still tells VPN users to turn the VPN off, and Disney's US terms ban hiding your location.
- What does Disney+ error 73 mean, and why do I see it without a VPN?
- Error 73 means Disney+ will not play the title from the location it sees. It names two causes: using Disney+ from a country where it is unavailable, and using a VPN or IP anonymizer (a tool that hides your IP address). Without a VPN, turn off any proxy or privacy tool, run the connection test, and restart the device and the app.
- Why is Disney+ not working with my VPN?
- Because Disney+ sees an unsupported location or a VPN. Connect to a different server within the same country and restart the app, then turn the VPN off to check the cause. In our research, VPNs score from 35% to 99% with Disney+, so a low-scoring VPN is the likelier problem.
- Can I watch Disney+ abroad?
- Yes, with limits. Abroad, Disney+ help says, you see what it offers in the country you are in, and you may be asked to confirm you are away from home. In Disney+'s EU help edition, EU subscribers keep their home library while traveling in the EU or EEA. Disney says Disney+ is in more than 150 countries and territories outside the U.S.
- Does NordVPN work with Disney+?
- Yes. NordVPN scores 99% across all Disney+ libraries in our October 2026 research, the figure our ranking uses, and we rank it third. Its US library score is 98% and its UK library score 100%, outside the ranking. NordVPN's help page lists fixes, from a DNS leak test and another server in the same country to a cleared app cache.
How we rank
We score every VPN on four things: how well it works with Disney+ in our research, which collects published results from reviewers, trackers and users; its apps for the TV devices people watch on; its features; and its price and refund terms. The Disney+ score out of 10 weighs them, with the research counting most, and only VPNs with enough research data for Disney+ are ranked. Commissions play no part in the ranking. Our full method.
