Methodology

How we write verdicts.

Every WhatWorks page answers one question with a verdict, its scope and a date. This page explains where the facts come from, how verdicts and rankings are decided, how we keep them current and how the site is funded.

The four verdicts.

Each answer ends in one of four verdicts, always with the scope it applies to.

  • WorksIt does what you asked, on the service, in the country and on the device the page names.
  • Works with conditionsIt works only with a specific plan, device, setting or location. The conditions are listed first.
  • Doesn't workIt is blocked, unsupported or not allowed by the service's terms. We say so plainly.
  • Not clear yetSources disagree or are out of date. We show what is known, what is missing and the date.

Where the facts come from.

Primary sources first. When an official source and a report disagree, the official source wins and the page says so.

  1. 1The service itselfIts terms of use, help pages and the exact error messages it shows, quoted with the date.
  2. 2The provider or device makerDocumentation, release notes and app store listings for each app and device.
  3. 3Laws and regulatorsPrimary texts and official guidance, such as the EU portability regulation 2017/1128.
  4. 4Independent measurementsPublished by named third parties and always credited on the page where we use them.

Rankings

Ranked by criteria you can see.

When a page compares VPNs, the order comes from published criteria for that service or device, never from what a provider pays.

  • Each ranking prints its criteria on the page, for that service or device: for example, whether an app exists on your TV, which features the service needs and the money-back terms.
  • Rankings differ from page to page because the criteria differ. A VPN that suits Apple TV may not suit a Vega OS Fire TV Stick.
  • Ties are shown as ties. Missing data counts against nobody: it is marked as missing.
  • Commissions, payments and partnerships play no part. No company can pay to appear or to move up.

Dates and updates.

Every fact carries the date it was true and comes up for review on a schedule set by how fast it changes.

  • Every 30 daysFast-changing facts: prices, app availability, error codes, which servers a service blocks.
  • Every 90 daysSeasonal facts: sports rights, broadcast schedules, plan line-ups.
  • Every 365 daysStable facts: laws, regulations, how a technology works.

A page's “Updated” date changes only when its content changes in substance, never just to look fresh. Corrections are dated on the page.

Who writes and reviews.

Every page is signed by the WhatWorks Editorial Team and checked against its sources before it goes live.

WhatWorks Editorial Team

Dated research, checked against sources

The WhatWorks Editorial Team signs every page on this site.

Each answer comes from dated research. The team checks every fact against its source: the service's own terms, the provider's documentation or a named third-party measurement.

When sources disagree or are out of date, the page says so. Commissions never decide a verdict or a position.

How we're funded

Commissions pay for the site. They never decide a verdict.

Some links to VPN providers are affiliate links: if you buy through them, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Commissions play no part in verdicts or rankings, and no company can pay for coverage or a better position.
