As of 7 October 2026, you can run a VPN on almost any device you own, directly or through a router. Phones, tablets and computers install an app. TVs and consoles depend on the system inside them. A router covers any that cannot run an app, and a hotspot or a stick covers a TV. This page ranks the VPNs across all of them, fixes common problems and is part of our VPN guides.
Find your device in this table, then follow its link.
| Your device | Can it run a VPN app? | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone or iPad | Yes, from all seven VPNs | Install the app from the App Store |
| Android phone or tablet | Yes, from all seven | Install the app |
| Windows PC or Mac | Yes, from all seven | Install the app |
| Linux | Five of the seven, plus a command-line app from CyberGhost | Install the app, or use a router |
| Chromebook | Yes, on models that run Android apps | Install the Android app, or use a router |
| A browser only | Six of the seven have an extension | Install it, but five of the six protect browser traffic only |
| Fire TV Stick | Yes: all seven on Fire OS, five on Vega OS | Install from the Amazon Appstore. Settings › My Fire TV › About shows whether you have Fire OS or Amazon's newer Vega OS |
| Apple TV | Yes, from six of the seven | Install from the App Store on tvOS 17 or later, or tvOS 18 for IPVanish (tvOS is the Apple TV's system) |
| Google TV, Android TV or Nvidia Shield | Yes, from all seven | Install from Google Play |
| Roku, Samsung TV or LG TV | None of the seven lists an app | Use a VPN router, a PC hotspot or a streaming stick with an app |
| PS5, PS4 or Xbox | ExpressVPN says the PS5 and Xbox have no native VPN | Use a VPN router, or a provider's Smart DNS, which does not change your IP address |
| Every device on your home network | Yes, with a router that has a VPN client | Set up the router once |

For every row with an app, start from our ranking across devices, where ExpressVPN leads. This page does not cover VR headsets, handheld PCs, e-readers, smart speakers or internet-provider routers, because nothing we read covers them yet.
A VPN changes a stream's location only on the device, its router or a sharing PC
A VPN changes what a streaming app sees only when it runs on the device that plays the stream, on its router or on a PC that shares its connection. Services work out your location from your connection. The Netflix catalog follows the country you are in, and BBC iPlayer checks the device's IP address, the number that tells a website where your connection comes from.
A VPN on one device therefore does not cover another. Google says a cast that hands playback to the TV device uses that device's own connection, so the phone's VPN does not carry the stream (see casting from a phone).
Five routes put a VPN between your device and the internet, while Smart DNS and casting do not
A VPN can run on the device, on a router that the device connects through, or on a PC that shares its connection. Smart DNS and casting from a phone do not do any of these.
| Route | What it does | Where it applies | The catch |
|---|---|---|---|
| A VPN app from the store | Runs the VPN on the device itself | Phones, tablets, computers, Fire TV, Apple TV, Google TV, Android TV | Three of the five Vega OS VPN apps list missing features |
| The system's own VPN settings | Lets you add a VPN by hand, using server details from your provider | Android, iPhone, iPad, Windows 10 and 11 (not Windows 11 SE), Mac | You need the provider's server details. Apple's iOS source is a guide for organizations, so we give no iPhone menu path |
| A VPN router | Runs the VPN once for the whole home network | Everything, including Roku, Samsung and LG TVs and consoles | It needs a VPN client, and NordVPN says stock Netgear firmware has only a server |
| Sideloading | Installs an app file from outside the store | Fire OS, and, per AndroidTVNews, Android TV and Google TV | Not on Vega OS |
| A Windows PC hotspot | A PC running a VPN shares its connection | A TV that has no app | The setup comes from VPN companies' guides, because Microsoft's page does not mention VPNs |
Source: platform makers' help pages and VPN providers' guides. Checked October 2026.
Two common shortcuts leave the device without a VPN:
| Shortcut | What it does | Where you meet it | Why it falls short |
|---|---|---|---|
| Smart DNS | Sends a device's look-ups for chosen streaming sites to the provider's servers | TVs and consoles that let you set DNS | No encryption and no new IP address, and Roku's help pages document no DNS setting |
| Casting from a phone | The phone controls playback and the TV device fetches the stream | Chromecast, and AirPlay (Apple's version of casting) | In a Google Cast session that hands over playback, the phone's VPN does not carry the stream. Apple's pages do not say the same for AirPlay, and mirroring differs |

Smart DNS does not change your IP address, and Surfshark ended its service in 2026
Smart DNS replaces a device's DNS servers, which look up web addresses, so lookups for chosen streaming domains go to the provider's servers. It does not encrypt traffic or change your IP address. NordVPN's SmartDNS and ExpressVPN's MediaStreamer need your home IP address registered, while Private Internet Access generates an address per device and country.
Surfshark discontinued its SmartDNS on 2 February 2026, CyberGhost says its own no longer works with streaming, and ExpressVPN says you cannot change locations with MediaStreamer. Sources point to several reasons Smart DNS works less often, so treat it as a last resort for a device with no other route.
Setting up a VPN app takes the same three moves on any device
- Buy the plan on the provider's website, because refunds for app-store purchases can sit with Apple, Google or Amazon.
- Install the app and sign in. On TVs, most apps offer a QR code or a code you enter on your phone.
- Connect to a server in the country whose catalog you want, such as a US server for the US Netflix catalog. If a stream fails, try another server in the same country before you change VPN.
The streaming hub has the longer steps for starting a stream, at home or abroad.
Our ranking across devices puts ExpressVPN first, NordVPN second and Surfshark third
As of 7 October 2026, ExpressVPN ranks first across devices with a Devices score of 9.0/10, ahead of NordVPN at 8.8/10 and Surfshark at 8.7/10. Proton VPN is fourth and IPVanish fifth, both at 8.5/10, with Proton VPN ahead before rounding. Private Internet Access (8.3/10) and CyberGhost (6.5/10) follow. The ranking leaves out Roku, Samsung and LG, because none of the seven VPNs lists an app for them.
The score combines how well each VPN works in practice in our research, device compatibility, features, and price and refunds. On a devices page, the score gives device compatibility more weight than our streaming ranking does, because it counts apps across phones, computers and TV platforms. The order still matches our streaming ranking. How we rank explains how rankings work on this site.

NordVPN ranks second here but fourth in our Fire TV ranking, which counts fewer services and only the two Fire TV systems. Proton VPN and IPVanish score almost the same overall, and Proton VPN is ahead before rounding. On the device side, Proton VPN lists no missing Vega OS features, and IPVanish allows unlimited devices for personal use, where Proton VPN Plus allows 10.
The table below shows which TV platform each VPN has an app for. Roku, Samsung and LG share one column, because none of the seven VPNs lists an app for them, and for IPVanish that means none was found for Samsung or LG.
- App in the platform's store
- App with features the provider lists as missing
- No app

iPhone, iPad and Android have apps from all seven VPNs, but casting can skip the phone's VPN
All seven VPNs we cover have an iPhone app that also runs on iPad, and an Android app for phones and tablets. Split tunneling sends only some apps through the VPN and the rest over your normal connection. Android lets a VPN app route only an allowed list of apps or exclude a list. On iPhone and iPad, Apple's per-app VPN needs a managed device, so split tunneling is more limited on iOS.
iPhone and iPad
Yes: all seven apps run on iPhone and iPad, and the minimum iOS version runs from 15 to 17 depending on the VPN. NordVPN and Proton VPN need iOS 17, and Proton points older iPhones to manual configuration.
- iOS and iPadOS also have built-in VPN client support for three connection types (protocols): IKEv2, L2TP over IPsec and Cisco IPsec, says Apple's deployment guide, which is written for organizations. VPN apps build on Apple's Network Extension framework.
- Proton VPN's help says iPhone and iPad Location Services can interfere with streaming, and that a time zone that differs from the VPN location can break some services.
Android phones and tablets
Yes: all seven VPNs have an Android app for phones and tablets, and the minimum Android version runs from 5.0 to 9. NordVPN needs Android 9 or later, and Proton VPN's own pages disagree (8.0 or 6.0).
- Android has built-in VPN settings under Settings › Network & internet › VPN, where you can add and connect a saved VPN, and a VPN app can set one up. Google says some steps work only on Android 14 and up.
- Google says the Always-on VPN switch sits in a saved VPN's settings, not on the screen of a VPN set up through an app. Android's VPN API also offers a Block connections without VPN switch.
- ExpressVPN, NordVPN, Surfshark and Private Internet Access also offer an APK, an Android app file, on their own sites, and Proton VPN offers one on GitHub. CyberGhost does not recommend third-party APKs.
Casting from a phone skips the phone's VPN when the TV fetches the stream
A cast that hands playback to the TV does not use the phone's VPN. Google's Cast documentation says the phone, the sender, controls playback while the Cast device, the receiver, brings in the stream, so the stream uses the Cast device's own connection. Screen mirroring differs.
- ExpressVPN lists casting from Android with its VPN on as not supported, says iOS and macOS cannot cast or mirror to Chromecast that way, and recommends a VPN router.
- Apple's WebKit team says AirPlay video needs a URL the receiver can play by itself, so the phone can be switched off. That implies the phone's VPN does not carry an AirPlayed stream, though Apple's pages do not say so.
Windows and Mac have apps from all seven VPNs, but Linux and Chromebooks have gaps
All seven VPNs we cover have a Windows app and a Mac app. Linux, Chromebooks and browser extensions have gaps, which the phone and computer table in the ranking section shows.
Windows
Yes: all seven VPNs have an app for Windows 10 and 11.
- Windows 10 and 11, except Windows 11 SE, also have a built-in VPN client under Settings › Network & internet › VPN › Add VPN, which needs a VPN profile and server details. Microsoft suggests checking the Microsoft Store for the service's app.
Mac
Yes: all seven VPNs have a Mac app. NordVPN's needs macOS 14 or later, in a direct-download build and a Mac App Store build with different features.
- macOS has a built-in VPN client under System Settings › Network › Action menu › Add VPN Configuration. It offers L2TP over IPSec, IPSec and IKEv2, with settings from the VPN provider.
Linux has desktop apps from five of the seven VPNs, and CyberGhost's is command-line only
Five VPNs have a Linux desktop app: ExpressVPN, NordVPN, Surfshark, Private Internet Access and Proton VPN. NordVPN's app needs its command-line tool installed, and Proton VPN says it officially supports Debian, Ubuntu and Fedora with GNOME.
CyberGhost has a command-line app with no graphical interface, and the pages we read for IPVanish name no native Linux app.
Chromebooks use the VPN's Android app, which some older models cannot run
Chromebooks use the VPN's Android app from Google Play, on models that run Android apps. ExpressVPN says older Chromebooks that lost Play Store access cannot install it, and NordVPN says some older models may not support it. Surfshark and Proton VPN work the same way.
- CyberGhost falls back to manual OpenVPN setup in network settings if the Chromebook cannot run Android apps. Private Internet Access says it works with Chromebooks, but the pages we read name no install route.
Six of seven VPNs have a Chrome extension, and five say it covers browser traffic only
Six of the seven VPNs we cover have a browser extension. ExpressVPN covers Chrome, Firefox and Brave. NordVPN and Surfshark cover Chrome, Edge and Firefox, and CyberGhost, Private Internet Access and Proton VPN cover Chrome and Firefox.
- NordVPN, Surfshark, CyberGhost, Private Internet Access and Proton VPN say their extensions protect browser traffic only, and NordVPN and Surfshark advise against running the extension and the app together. ExpressVPN's can run as a standalone proxy or as a remote control for its desktop app.
- The pages we read for IPVanish describe no VPN browser extension, only a SOCKS5 proxy and extensions for its Secure Browser product.
Sharing a Windows PC's VPN with a TV
A TV with no app can use a Windows PC's VPN if the PC shares its connection as a hotspot. Windows 11 does this under Settings › Network & internet › Mobile hotspot, with the source chosen under "Share my internet connection from". Microsoft's page does not mention VPNs, so the VPN part comes from the providers' guides.
- Surfshark recommends a connection shared from a Windows PC or a phone hotspot for Samsung TVs, and a VPN hotspot from a Windows PC for LG TVs. NordVPN recommends a VPN-protected hotspot for Roku.
- This page gives no steps for sharing a VPN from a phone or a Mac, because we have not read a source for them.
Smart TVs: apps on Fire TV, Apple TV and Google TV, none listed for Roku, Samsung or LG
The system inside a smart TV decides whether it can take a VPN app. Fire TV, Apple TV and Google TV take VPN apps from their own stores, and none of the seven VPNs lists an app for Roku, Samsung or LG TVs.
For those TVs, the VPN companies point to a VPN router, a PC hotspot, a streaming stick with an app, or Smart DNS. Nothing we read covers Hisense, TCL, Sony, Philips or Vizio models one by one, so check which system your TV runs.
| If you want | Use | What it needs |
|---|---|---|
| Every device on your network covered | A VPN router | A router with a VPN client |
| Only this TV covered, with no router change | A streaming stick with an app | A Fire TV or Android TV device |
| To use a PC you already own | A PC hotspot | A PC running the VPN and sharing its connection |
| Something for a device with no other route | Smart DNS | Some services need your home IP address registered, and it does not change your IP address |

Fire TV Sticks run a VPN app on both Fire OS and Vega OS, with gaps on Vega OS
Yes, Fire TV Sticks install VPN apps from the Amazon Appstore as of 7 October 2026.
- Fire TV Sticks run Fire OS, which is Android-based, or Vega OS, Amazon's newer Linux-based system. Open Settings › My Fire TV › About. Amazon's specifications list Vega OS 1.1 and 2.0 and Fire OS 7 and 8, so a version starting with 1 or 2 is Vega OS.
- All seven VPNs we cover have a Fire OS app, and five have a Vega OS app, three of them with missing features. Vega OS takes Appstore apps only. See which features Vega OS VPN apps leave out.
- Proton VPN documents a free plan with a Fire TV app, and streaming needs a paid plan. The Fire TV guide covers free plans on a Fire Stick.
To install on a Fire TV Stick, on either system:
- Go to Find or Search, pick the official VPN app and check that "Works With" lists your stick.
- Select Get, open the app and sign in with a QR code or a code.
- Accept the connection request.
- Pick a server in the country whose catalog you want.
The Appstore install steps and the Vega OS setup steps show each screen.
ExpressVPN leads our Fire TV ranking, followed by Proton VPN.
Apple TV takes VPN apps from the App Store on tvOS 17 and later
Yes, Apple TV runs VPN apps: Apple's tvOS 17 release notes say you can download them from the App Store.
- Six of the seven VPNs we cover have an Apple TV app, and our best VPN for Apple TV page ranks them. CyberGhost has none, Proton VPN's needs a paid plan, and IPVanish's needs tvOS 18 or later.
- MacRumors reports that tvOS 27 leaves Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K (1st generation) on tvOS 26. That is newer than the highest minimum any of these VPNs lists, tvOS 18.
- Apple's Apple TV guide documents no manual DNS steps. ExpressVPN's guide sets DNS at Settings › Network › [your connection] › Configure DNS › Manual.
Google TV and Android TV take VPN apps from Google Play, and allow sideloading
Yes, Google TV and Android TV run VPN apps from Google Play, and all seven VPNs we cover have an Android TV app. Private Internet Access warns its app may not work on every Android TV box. For our ranking of the seven VPN apps on Google TV, see best VPN for Google TV.
- Sideloading, installing an app file from outside Google Play, is also possible: ExpressVPN and CyberGhost offer an APK, AndroidTVNews describes the per-app Unknown sources setting on Chromecast with Google TV, and Play Protect, on by default, checks apps from outside Google Play.
Chromecast with Google TV and Nvidia Shield run VPN apps from Google Play
Yes on Chromecast with Google TV, where Proton VPN says its Android TV app runs, and on Nvidia Shield, which takes Google Play apps like any Android TV box. Nothing we read says a VPN app installs on an older Chromecast that is not a Google TV model, so use a VPN router for it. A phone's VPN does not carry a cast stream when the session hands playback to the TV; screen mirroring differs. See casting from a phone.
Roku: none of the seven VPNs lists an app, so use a router or a hotspot
NordVPN says its app cannot be installed on Roku OS, and ExpressVPN and IPVanish point Roku owners to a VPN router, with IPVanish adding a connection shared from a computer.
- Surfshark suggests a separate Fire TV or Android TV device for Roku.
- If the Roku mobile app cannot find your Roku, disconnect the phone from its VPN: Roku says some VPN apps hide the Roku from the app.
- Roku's networking help documents no static-IP or manual-DNS setting, so a Smart DNS has to be set on the router. Roku says some devices handle both IPv4 and IPv6 addresses, which matters for Smart DNS services that handle only IPv4.
Samsung TVs: Surfshark says most cannot install VPN apps, so use a router or a hotspot
Surfshark says most Samsung smart TVs cannot install VPN apps because Tizen, Samsung's TV system, does not allow traditional VPN app installations. Nothing we read from Samsung addresses VPN apps.
- ExpressVPN points Samsung and LG owners to MediaStreamer, which cannot change your location, and NordVPN offers router or PC-hotspot setups and SmartDNS for some TVs. Surfshark's Samsung page no longer mentions Smart DNS.
- On 2022 and newer Samsung TVs, DNS is at Settings › All Settings › Connection › Network › Network Status › IP Settings. On 2021 and older TVs, it is at Settings › General › Network › Network Status › IP Settings. Samsung's help says menus vary by model and region.
Surfshark says LG TVs do not support VPN apps natively, and LG documents the DNS path
Surfshark says LG webOS TVs do not natively support VPN apps and recommends a router VPN or a VPN hotspot from a Windows PC. Nothing we read from LG addresses VPN apps.
- LG's help page sets DNS on webOS 6.0 and later at Settings › All Settings › General › Network › Internet Connection. Then open Wi-Fi Connection › Advanced Wi-Fi Settings, or Wired › Edit, and edit the DNS server.
Consoles: ExpressVPN says the PS5 and Xbox lack native VPN support, so use a router or DNS
ExpressVPN says the PS5 and the Xbox do not natively support a VPN, and it offers its MediaStreamer DNS service as the alternative. MediaStreamer does not encrypt traffic, and ExpressVPN says you cannot change locations with it. Router makers say a VPN on the router covers consoles too, and the PS5, PS4 and Xbox let you set DNS.
PlayStation 5 and PS4
PlayStation support documents DNS for the PS5 and PS4 at Settings › Network › Settings › Set Up Internet Connection › Advanced Settings. The same screen holds other connection settings.
- NordVPN's SmartDNS needs your IPv4 address allowlisted, and Private Internet Access generates a Smart DNS address per device and country.
Xbox
Microsoft confirms where Xbox DNS lives: Profile & system › Settings › General › Network settings › Advanced settings, where DNS can be set manually or automatically.
A router with a VPN client covers every device, including TVs and consoles with no app
Router makers say a VPN client on the router encrypts traffic for every connected device, including TVs and consoles that cannot run a VPN app. Look for a VPN client, not a VPN server. A router's own VPN server works the other way round: it lets you connect into your home network from outside. Firmware is a router's software, and WireGuard and OpenVPN are connection types (protocols).
How to set up a VPN on a router in three steps
- Check that the router has a VPN client, not only a VPN server. A router's own VPN server, such as Netgear's, lets you connect into your home network from outside.
- Add your VPN's configuration in the router's VPN client, usually a WireGuard or OpenVPN file from your provider. GL.iNet imports .ovpn files, and ASUS takes an uploaded config.
- Choose which devices use the VPN where the router lets you, then check your IP address and DNS for leaks, as OpenWrt advises.
Which VPNs support routers, and how
All seven VPNs we cover support routers, mostly by manual setup on a router with a VPN client.
| VPN | How it supports routers | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| ExpressVPN | Its own Aircove routers, the GL.iNet Fortify, a firmware app for some Asus, Linksys and Netgear models | None listed |
| NordVPN | Manual setup on many firmwares, a Lite client package for OpenWrt, and preconfigured FlashRouters units | None listed |
| Surfshark | Manual setup on routers with an OpenVPN or WireGuard client | A router setup loses access to most app features |
| Proton VPN | Manual OpenVPN or WireGuard guides for AsusWRT, DD-WRT, GL.iNet, OpenWrt and more | None listed |
| IPVanish | Manual setups for DD-WRT, Tomato, AsusWRT and OpenWrt, and preconfigured FlashRouters units | None listed |
| Private Internet Access | Manual OpenVPN setups for DD-WRT, OpenWrt, AsusWRT, pfSense and FreshTomato | No manual WireGuard on routers |
| CyberGhost | Manual OpenVPN setup only | Its Dedicated IP cannot be used on a router |

GL.iNet routers
GL.iNet's firmware 4.7 and later runs both WireGuard and OpenVPN clients, and some cruise lines ban its travel routers.
- The WireGuard client sits under VPN › WireGuard Client, with built-in support for NordVPN, Surfshark, Private Internet Access, IPVanish and Mullvad. The OpenVPN client imports a provider's .ovpn files, including ExpressVPN, CyberGhost and Proton VPN.
- A Block Non-VPN Traffic option stops traffic leaving outside the tunnel when the VPN drops.
ASUS routers
ASUS routers on its VPN Fusion list can run a WireGuard client and send only chosen devices through it.
- The client is under VPN › VPN Fusion › Add profile (Upload Config), on firmware later than 3.0.0.4.388.23000. You choose which devices use each profile, so the TV can use the VPN while the rest keep the normal connection.
TP-Link routers
Supported TP-Link routers have a VPN client for OpenVPN, PPTP, L2TP/IPSec and, on some models, WireGuard, but not every TP-Link router has one.
- On a supported TP-Link router, open Advanced › VPN Client. You can store up to six profiles with one active, and only devices on the list use the VPN.
- Deco mesh systems have a client in the Deco app at More › VPN › VPN Client.
Netgear routers
Netgear's built-in VPN Service is a VPN server for remote access to your home network, not a client. NordVPN says Netgear routers on stock firmware cannot act as OpenVPN clients unless you flash firmware such as DD-WRT, which can risk the warranty.
OpenWrt routers
OpenWrt documents a WireGuard client, set up on the command line with the wireguard-tools package, and an OpenVPN client that loads a provider's .ovpn profile. It recommends checking routes and DNS leaks after setup.

ExpressVPN and Proton VPN have the fullest TV apps, and CyberGhost has the fewest
ExpressVPN and Proton VPN have an app on all four TV platforms where any VPN has one, with no missing Vega OS features listed. The list follows our ranking across devices. The provider comparison covers the companies across all uses.
- ExpressVPN's Vega OS app lists no missing features, and its MediaStreamer cannot change your location. It has no Roku, Samsung or LG app.
- NordVPN's Vega OS app is temporarily missing some features, and it offers SmartDNS for devices that cannot run the app.
- Surfshark's Vega OS app offers core features only, with no kill switch (a feature that cuts your internet if the VPN drops). It allows unlimited devices.
- Proton VPN lists no missing Vega OS features, and we found no Proton Smart DNS feature.
- IPVanish's Apple TV app needs tvOS 18 or later, and its Vega OS app lacks split tunneling and protocol switching. We found no IPVanish Smart DNS, and the pages we read name no native Linux app and describe no VPN browser extension.
- Private Internet Access says its app is not compatible with Vega OS. It offers a Smart DNS by country, and the pages we read name no Chromebook install route.
- CyberGhost has no Apple TV app, and we found no Vega OS app. It says its Smart DNS no longer works with streaming services, and its Linux app is command-line only.

CyberGhost gives 45 days on plans of six months or longer, and IPVanish refunds only first-time annual or longer plans.

Quick questions
- Can you put a VPN on a smart TV?
- Yes if the TV runs Google TV or Android TV, but not on most Samsung or LG TVs, according to Surfshark. Proton VPN says its app runs on TVs using the Google TV interface. For a Samsung or LG TV, use a VPN router, a Windows PC hotspot or a streaming stick with an app.
- Can you use a VPN on Roku?
- Not with an app. NordVPN says its app cannot be installed on Roku OS, and ExpressVPN and IPVanish point Roku owners to a VPN router. Roku documents no manual DNS setting either. Use a router, a hotspot from a computer, or a Fire TV or Android TV stick instead.
- Does a VPN on my phone work when I cast to my TV?
- Usually not. Google's Cast documentation says the phone only controls playback and the TV device brings in the stream over its own connection, so the phone's VPN does not carry it. Screen mirroring differs. ExpressVPN lists casting from Android with its VPN on as not supported. Put the VPN on the TV or the router.
- Can you put a VPN on Apple TV?
- Yes. Apple's tvOS 17 release notes say you can download VPN apps from the App Store, and six of the seven VPNs we cover have an Apple TV app. IPVanish needs tvOS 18 or later, Proton VPN's Apple TV app needs a paid plan, and CyberGhost has none.
- Can you use a VPN on a PS5 or Xbox?
- Not natively, according to ExpressVPN, which says neither the PS5 nor the Xbox supports a VPN and offers its MediaStreamer DNS service instead. ExpressVPN says MediaStreamer cannot change your location. A VPN on your router covers a console, and both consoles let you set DNS by hand.
- Can you set up a VPN on a router?
- Yes, if the router has a VPN client, not only a VPN server. All seven VPNs we cover support routers, mostly by manual setup, and router makers say a VPN on the router covers every device, including TVs and consoles. NordVPN says stock Netgear firmware has a VPN server only, so check your model first.
