Key takeaways

  • Its research scores split in two: 100% with HBO Max, then 70% with Netflix and 39% with Disney+. Six other services have no score.
  • It ranks sixth for streaming and across devices, fourth for Netflix and first of five for HBO Max. It is not ranked for Fire TV.
  • For TVs with no app it offers Smart DNS. It says its app is not compatible with Vega OS, on newer Fire TV Sticks.
  • It allows unlimited devices and had the lowest first-term euro price an EU visitor saw on 6 October 2026: €1.79 a month for 39 months.
  • PIA suits HBO Max viewers and homes with many screens. Choose another VPN for Disney+, Netflix US or a Vega OS Fire TV Stick.

As of October 2026, Private Internet Access (PIA) works with HBO Max in our research, is middling with Netflix and poor with Disney+. It ranks sixth for streaming but first of five for HBO Max. This profile covers each service's score, Smart DNS, what PIA says about Vega OS, prices and the owner.

Our streaming ranking counts six services: Netflix, BBC iPlayer (UK), Prime Video, Disney+, HBO Max and Hulu (US). PIA has a research score for three of them, and two are lower: Netflix at 70% and Disney+ at 39%. That puts it sixth for streaming.

The score combines how well each VPN works in practice in our research, device compatibility, features, and price and refunds. How we rank explains how rankings work on this site.

Positions among the seven VPNs we cover, scores out of 10. A VPN with too little research data for a use case is not ranked there. Our research, 19 October 2026.

HBO Max is ranked on its own. There, ExpressVPN and NordVPN share PIA's research score of 100%, so the other parts of our HBO Max score decide the order. PIA comes first of the five VPNs ranked for HBO Max, at 9.6/10. Fire TV counts services where PIA has too little data, so it is not ranked there. The same is true for BBC iPlayer (UK), Prime Video and Hulu (US).

Private Internet Access is strongest with HBO Max and weakest with Disney+

In our research (October 2026), Private Internet Access scores 100% with HBO Max, 70% with Netflix across all libraries and 39% with Disney+. For BBC iPlayer (UK), Prime Video, Hulu (US), ESPN, YouTube TV and Peacock, there is not enough recent evidence for a PIA score.

HBO Max shows an "Are you using a VPN?" message and says users must turn off a VPN, proxy or anonymization service. In our research PIA still scores 100% with it. HBO Max's terms also bar masking your location, and the caution note further down quotes them. Disney+ gives the opposite result. It tells anyone using a VPN to disable it with error 73, and PIA scores 39% in our Disney+ ranking, against 99% for ExpressVPN, NordVPN and IPVanish.

Private Internet Access ranks fourth for Netflix, yet has the lowest Netflix US score

PIA's 70% across all Netflix libraries is the fourth highest of the seven VPNs we cover, behind IPVanish (83%), ExpressVPN (78%) and Proton VPN (77%). PIA is also fourth in our Netflix ranking. For the US library alone, its 67% is the lowest of the seven. The all-libraries score also counts other countries and evidence that named no country, so it can sit above a single country's score.

Private Internet Access has apps for Fire OS, Android TV and Apple TV, but not Vega OS

As of 7 October 2026, PIA has TV apps for Fire OS 6 or later, Android TV, and Apple TV on tvOS 17 or later. It says its app is not currently compatible with Vega OS. For Android TV, PIA says the app may not work on every box.

Newer Fire TV Sticks run Vega OS. Amazon's specifications list three: the Fire TV Stick 4K Select (2025), the Fire TV Stick HD (2026) and the Fire TV Stick 4K 3rd Gen (2026). AFTVnews says Settings › My Fire TV › About shows a software version starting with 1 or 2 on them. Amazon's product pages for the Fire TV Stick 4K and 4K Select say they block sideloading (installing apps outside the store), so PIA's Downloader route is not an option there.

ExpressVPN, NordVPN, Surfshark, Proton VPN and IPVanish do have Vega OS apps, though some leave features out. On a Vega OS stick, PIA could run on your router or on a separate Apple TV or Android TV device.

Private Internet Access on a Firestick: install, sign in and pick a location

On a Fire OS stick, PIA's own guide gives these steps. The full Firestick install guide covers both systems.

  1. Under Find, search for Private Internet Access, select "VPN by Private Internet Access" and choose Download.
  2. Sign in with your PIA username, which starts with p, and your password. Type them with the remote, or on a phone after scanning the QR code.
  3. Select OK to let PIA add a VPN configuration, then OK again on the connection request.
  4. Select the location to open the All, Favorite and Search tabs, because the power button alone connects to the Optimal Location.
  5. Press the red power button. PIA's Fire TV guide says it turns green when you are connected.

PIA's Fire TV app can connect when the system starts, when the app launches or when it updates. The setting is under the gear icon, General Settings › General, using labels from PIA's Android TV-box guide. If the app will not connect, the Fire TV troubleshooting steps cover the usual causes.

Private Internet Access offers Smart DNS by country for TVs that have no app

Private Internet Access offers Smart DNS, and its July 2026 help pages say to select a device, then a country, in its control panel. Smart DNS is a way to use a VPN company's address lookup on a device that cannot run its app. The device's lookups for chosen streaming sites are answered by the provider's servers. CyberGhost, NordVPN and ExpressVPN say it does not encrypt traffic or change your IP address.

Sources say Smart DNS works less often, partly because some providers have dropped it. If you are a new subscriber buying on PIA's website, try it on your TV within the 30-day refund window before you rely on it. Nothing we read from the other six VPNs describes choosing a country for each device's Smart DNS.

Private Internet Access allows unlimited devices, and routers need a manual OpenVPN setup

PIA allows unlimited simultaneous connections, so one account can cover every TV, phone and computer at home. The table lists what else it documents for streaming, as of October 2026.

Private Internet Access says to match your country, yet its Amazon listing says it unblocks

PIA's streaming help page tells you to connect to a server in the country where you are, using its streaming-optimized servers. It carries the same Terms of Service warning as ExpressVPN and CyberGhost. PIA's Amazon Appstore listing says PIA "unblocks content". These are PIA's positions, so the research scores above show what its servers do in practice.

Private Internet Access prices: cheapest in euros on 3 years, with a 30-day website refund

As an EU visitor saw it on 6 October 2026, PIA's lowest first-term price was €1.79 a month, on a 3 years + 3 months plan. The next lowest in euros was CyberGhost at €2.19 on 2 years + 2 months, and the others were €2.49 to €3.49. That low price needs the longest commitment of the six, 39 months. IPVanish showed dollars, so it is not compared.

PIA gives a 30-day money-back guarantee on website purchases by new subscribers. App-store, gift-card and third-party purchases are excluded, so buy on its website, not in the Fire TV app. We recorded these prices as an EU visitor, so we have no US dollar prices for PIA.

Nothing we read documents a free PIA plan or trial, so the refund is how you try it. Of the seven VPNs we cover, Proton VPN documents a free plan.

Private Internet Access is a Kape brand, listed with ExpressVPN and CyberGhost

Kape, a company headquartered in London, lists Private Internet Access among its brands, and the app-store seller is Private Internet Access, Inc. Kape's list also includes ExpressVPN and CyberGhost. ExpressVPN's profile covers Kape from that side.

Being listed by the same company has not made the three alike in our research. PIA is sixth for streaming, ExpressVPN first and CyberGhost seventh, and they differ on Vega OS apps, devices at once and refunds, as our comparison of the seven providers shows.

Private Internet Access suits HBO Max viewers and big households, not Disney+ or Vega OS

PIA suits you if you watch HBO Max, want one account for many screens, or want the lowest first-term euro price. It is a weaker choice for Disney+, Netflix US or a Vega OS Fire TV Stick. Our research cannot yet rate it for BBC iPlayer (UK), Prime Video, Hulu (US), ESPN, YouTube TV or Peacock.

Where to go next

Quick questions

Does Private Internet Access (PIA) work with Netflix?
It does, but it is weakest for the US library. In our research (October 2026), Private Internet Access scores 70% with Netflix across all libraries, fourth of the seven VPNs we cover. Its 67% with Netflix US is the lowest US score. There is not enough data for the UK, Germany, Japan, France or Canada.
Does Private Internet Access work with HBO Max and Disney+?
Yes for HBO Max, but not for Disney+. In our research (October 2026), Private Internet Access scores 100% with HBO Max, level with ExpressVPN and NordVPN, and 39% with Disney+, where ExpressVPN, NordVPN and IPVanish score 99%. Disney+ error 73 tells anyone using a VPN to turn it off.
Does Private Internet Access have Smart DNS for Samsung and LG TVs?
Yes. PIA lists no Roku, Samsung or LG app, so for those TVs it offers Smart DNS, a router or a PC sharing its connection. For Smart DNS you create an address for each device and choose a country in PIA's control panel. Our research has no Smart DNS score, so try it within the 30-day refund, if you are a new website subscriber, before relying on it.
Does Private Internet Access (PIA) work on a Firestick?
Yes on Fire OS. On Vega OS, PIA says its app is not compatible. PIA's app is in the Amazon Appstore for Fire OS 6 or later. AFTVnews says a software version starting with 1 or 2 under Settings › My Fire TV › About means Vega OS, the system on newer sticks.
Does Private Internet Access work with BBC iPlayer?
Our research has no answer yet: as of October 2026, there is too little recent evidence for a UK score for Private Internet Access with BBC iPlayer. ExpressVPN, NordVPN, Proton VPN and Surfshark score 100%. The BBC says iPlayer will not play if it detects you might be using a VPN.
How much does Private Internet Access cost?
On 6 October 2026 an EU visitor saw €1.79 a month on a 3 years + 3 months plan, renewing at €70 every 3 years. A 1-year plan was €3.49 a month, and a monthly plan €11.69. The 30-day refund covers new subscribers who buy on PIA's website. Nothing we read documents a free plan or trial.
