The best BBC iPlayer VPNs compared
In our October 2026 research, four of the six VPNs we rank score 100% with BBC iPlayer (UK). Devices, features, and price and refunds decide their order. This ranking suits TV Licence holders away from the UK, and UK viewers whose VPN gets blocked at home. The BBC says iPlayer is for people in the UK, so read its rules below before you decide.

Our scores and the providers' own pages, 19 October 2026. Only VPNs with enough research data for BBC iPlayer are ranked (not ranked: Private Internet Access).
Our best VPN for streaming ranking puts iPlayer next to five other services, and the streaming hub covers each service's VPN rules.
Our ranking: Surfshark leads the six VPNs we rank for BBC iPlayer
Surfshark leads our BBC iPlayer ranking with 9.6/10, narrowly ahead of ExpressVPN. Four VPNs tie at 100% in our October 2026 research, and of those four only Surfshark has no device cap. The score combines how well each VPN works in practice in our research, device compatibility, features, and price and refunds.
Surfshark, ExpressVPN, Proton VPN and NordVPN all reach 100%, so what else each offers sets their order. Surfshark has no device cap, where the other three allow 10 on their base plans. Its first-term plan matched ExpressVPN's Basic plan and undercut Proton VPN's and NordVPN's for an EU visitor on 6 October 2026. NordVPN falls last of the four on renewal price, and its Vega OS app is missing some features.
1. Surfshark: best overall
Ranked first of the 6 VPNs with enough research data for BBC iPlayer
- 100% with BBC iPlayer in our research
- Unlimited devices on every plan
- Fire OS, Android TV, Apple TV apps
- Vega OS app has core features only
- Smart DNS ended in February 2026
- Routers lose most app features
- BBC iPlayer in our research
- 100%
- Devices at once
- Unlimited
- Money-back
- 30 days
- Router setup
- Yes

Why it's here. Surfshark is first on our overall score, narrowly ahead of ExpressVPN. It ties the leaders at 100% in our research and is the only one of the top four with no device cap. Its first-term price matches ExpressVPN's Basic plan, and we did not record its renewal price.
Who it's for. Surfshark suits a household where phones, laptops and a TV all use the VPN at once. It has apps for Fire OS, Android TV and Apple TV, and its BBC help article is short: connect, then clear the browser cache if needed.
Who should look elsewhere. Its Vega OS app offers core VPN functions only, so on the Vega OS models, explained in our Fire TV guide, ExpressVPN or Proton VPN may suit better. Their Vega OS apps list no feature gaps in the sources we read (Proton's launched on 16 September 2026). Surfshark also ended its Smart DNS on 2 February 2026, and its router guide warns that a router setup loses most app features.
2. ExpressVPN: best for TVs and routers
- 100% with BBC iPlayer in our research
- Fire OS, Vega OS, Android TV, Apple TV apps
- Sells its own Aircove routers
- Help guide lists UK servers to try
- 10 devices at once on the base plan
- Smart DNS cannot change your location
- BBC iPlayer in our research
- 100%
- Devices at once
- 10
- Money-back
- 30 days
- Router setup
- Yes

Why it's here. We rank ExpressVPN second, 0.1 points behind Surfshark. It scores 100% with BBC iPlayer (UK) in our research.
Who it's for. ExpressVPN suits anyone who watches on a Fire TV, Android TV or Apple TV, and it sells its own Aircove routers for TVs that cannot run an app. Its iPlayer help guide, updated 21 July 2026, is written for UK users and lists five UK server locations to try in order.
Who should look elsewhere. ExpressVPN allows 10 devices on its Basic plan, where Surfshark sets no limit. Its MediaStreamer Smart DNS cannot change your location.
3. Proton VPN: also 100%, paid plan needed
- 100% with BBC iPlayer in our research
- Fire OS, Vega OS, Android TV, Apple TV apps
- Help guide lists fixes to try
- Streaming needs a paid plan
- Higher first-term price than Surfshark
- 10 devices at once
- BBC iPlayer in our research
- 100%
- Devices at once
- 10
- Money-back
- 30 days
- Router setup
- Yes

Why it's here. We rank Proton VPN third. It scores 100% with BBC iPlayer (UK) in our research, like ExpressVPN, with the same four TV apps.
Who it's for. Proton VPN suits viewers who use Fire OS, Vega OS, Android TV or Apple TV apps and will pay for a Plus plan. Its iPlayer guide says you need a paid plan, a Plus server in the UK and a valid UK TV Licence.
Who should look elsewhere. Proton's Apple TV app needs a paid plan, streaming on its Fire TV app does too, and it allows 10 devices at a time. Its two-year Plus plan also started at a higher monthly price than Surfshark's for an EU visitor on 6 October 2026.
4. NordVPN: works well, costs more to renew
- 100% with BBC iPlayer in our research
- Fire OS, Android TV, Apple TV apps
- Works on routers by manual setup
- Help article names the fixes to try
- Vega OS app misses some features
- Renews above ExpressVPN and Proton VPN
- 10 devices at once
- BBC iPlayer in our research
- 100%
- Devices at once
- 10
- Money-back
- 30 days
- Router setup
- Yes

Why it's here. We rank NordVPN fourth. It scores 100% with BBC iPlayer (UK) in our research. A higher renewal price and Vega OS gaps pull it below ExpressVPN and Proton VPN, and Surfshark's lack of a device cap puts that VPN ahead.
Who it's for. NordVPN suits viewers on Fire OS, Android TV or Apple TV who also want router support. Its help article for BBC problems says to connect to any UK server.
Who should look elsewhere. NordVPN says its Vega OS app is temporarily missing some features, so a new Fire TV Stick suits ExpressVPN or Proton VPN better. Its two-year Basic plan also renews at a higher yearly price than ExpressVPN's Basic plan.
5. IPVanish: unlimited devices, weaker iPlayer record
- Unlimited devices for personal use
- Leads our Netflix ranking
- Apps for Fire OS, Android TV, Apple TV
- 62% with BBC iPlayer in our research
- Apple TV app needs tvOS 18
- Vega OS app misses some features
- BBC iPlayer in our research
- 62%
- Devices at once
- Unlimited
- Money-back
- 30 days
- Router setup
- Yes

Why it's here. We rank IPVanish fifth. Its research score for BBC iPlayer (UK) is 62%, well below the top four. Unlimited devices for personal use and split tunneling on Fire OS make up some ground.
Who it's for. IPVanish suits a household that streams mostly Netflix, where it leads our Netflix ranking.
Who should look elsewhere. Skip it if iPlayer is your main reason to buy. Its Apple TV app needs tvOS 18, and its 30-day refund covers only first-time annual or longer plans bought on its website.
6. CyberGhost: weakest iPlayer record
- 45-day refund on plans of six months or more
- Fire OS and Android TV apps
- Supports routers by manual setup
- 33% with BBC iPlayer in our research
- No Apple TV app; no Vega OS app found
- 7 devices at once
- BBC iPlayer in our research
- 33%
- Devices at once
- 7
- Money-back
- 45 days
- Router setup
- Yes

Why it's here. We rank CyberGhost last because its research score for BBC iPlayer (UK) is 33%, the lowest of the six. It also has no Apple TV app and no Vega OS app that we found.
Who it's for. CyberGhost suits an existing customer who wants the longest refund window, 45 days on plans of six months or longer. It has Fire OS and Android TV apps.
Who should look elsewhere. Anyone who buys mainly for BBC iPlayer should pick one of the top four. CyberGhost allows 7 devices at once, and it says its Smart DNS "is no longer compatible with streaming services".
Set up a VPN for BBC iPlayer in five steps, with a UK server
BBC iPlayer says it checks your IP address and shows an error if it is not registered in the UK, so the VPN server must be in the UK. The BBC's terms list using a VPN to watch iPlayer from outside the UK as not allowed. The rules are below.
- Buy the plan on the VPN's own website. ExpressVPN says Apple or Google refund its app-store purchases, and CyberGhost excludes them from its guarantee.
- Install the VPN app on the device you watch on, such as a Fire TV Stick or an Apple TV, and sign in.
- Connect to a server in the UK. NordVPN's help says any UK server, and Proton VPN's says a Plus server in the UK.
- Open BBC iPlayer and sign in with your BBC account. The iPlayer website carries a "Got a TV Licence?" prompt.
- If playback fails, try another UK server, then clear the app or browser cache.
To check the result, run our VPN check with the VPN connected. It shows the country sites see. BBC iPlayer streams standard quality at 1.5 Mbps and high quality at up to 5 Mbps, so check your connection with the VPN on.
Fire TV, Apple TV and Google TV have VPN apps, while Samsung, LG and Roku TVs need a router or another device
BBC iPlayer is certified on Fire TV, Google TV, Samsung, LG and Roku devices and works on Apple TV, but the six VPNs have apps only for some of them.
| Device | BBC iPlayer app | VPN app from the six we rank |
|---|---|---|
| Phone or tablet | The iPlayer app, or the BBC website in Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari on a computer | iPhone and Android apps from all six |
| Fire TV Stick | The BBC certifies Fire TV devices model by model, 2025 and 2026 models included | All six have a Fire OS app (older Fire TV Sticks may not run Surfshark, Proton VPN, NordVPN or IPVanish); five have a Vega OS app, none from CyberGhost that we found |
| Apple TV | Works on the latest tvOS, with no UHD | Five of six have an app; CyberGhost has none, and IPVanish needs tvOS 18 |
| Google TV and Android TV | The BBC certifies Google TV Streamer 4K and Chromecast with Google TV | All six have an Android TV app (our Google TV ranking) |
| Samsung, LG and Roku TVs | The BBC publishes certified model lists; Roku devices bought outside the UK are not approved | None of the six lists an app, so use a router or a separate streaming device |

For a TV with no VPN app, use a router with a VPN client. Router makers say it covers every device on your network, and all six VPNs we rank support routers, mostly by manual setup. Our router guide has the steps.
Casting from a phone is unlikely to use the phone's VPN. Google says the Cast device fetches the stream itself, and Apple's WebKit team implies the same for AirPlay video (screen mirroring is different). Smart DNS, which swaps your DNS servers for a provider's, does not change your IP address, as ExpressVPN, NordVPN and CyberGhost say, and the BBC says iPlayer checks it. We do not count on Smart DNS for iPlayer.
BBC iPlayer not working with your VPN: what the message means and what to try
When BBC iPlayer blocks your VPN, ExpressVPN and NordVPN advise another UK server first, then clearing the cache, while the BBC's own advice is to turn the VPN off.
- The BBC says it uses the location of your internet provider and will not play a program when it detects a possible VPN or proxy.
- A work network or a new internet address can trigger the same message.
- Our guide to BBC iPlayer not working with a VPN has every fix, including the cases with no VPN on.
If a VPN still fails with iPlayer, use its money-back guarantee. It is 30 days at ExpressVPN, NordVPN, Surfshark and Proton VPN, though ExpressVPN and NordVPN limit it to new customers. IPVanish gives 30 days on first-time annual or longer plans bought on its website, and CyberGhost gives 45 days on plans of six months or more.
The BBC allows iPlayer only in the UK, and TV Licensing says you need a TV Licence with or without a VPN
The BBC says you need to be in the UK to stream or download programs on iPlayer. TV Licensing says you need a TV Licence to use it even with a VPN.
- The BBC restricts iPlayer to UK residents because the UK TV Licence funds it, so people who live abroad cannot use it.
- Its Terms of Use list using a VPN to watch iPlayer from outside the UK as access you are not allowed. They also tell users not to stream or download iPlayer TV shows outside the UK.
These are the BBC's positions. Our research scores show what happens in practice: four VPNs score 100%. A score is a record, not a promise, and Proton VPN's own guide warns that BBC iPlayer may not always work.
| Situation | What the rules say |
|---|---|
| Outside the UK | TV Licensing says you must be covered by a TV Licence to download or watch on iPlayer wherever you are. |
| In the UK, with or without a VPN | The BBC says a TV Licence is required on any device (except S4C programs on demand), and that watching without one is a criminal offense with a fine of up to £1,000 (£2,000 in Guernsey). TV Licensing says this holds even if you use a VPN. A color TV Licence costs £180 a year from 1 April 2026. |
| Away from home in the UK | Your home TV Licence covers iPlayer only on a device that is not plugged into the mains. A device plugged in at another address needs that address's own TV Licence. |

The BBC says programs downloaded on a phone or tablet while you are in the UK can be watched anywhere in the world. They stay on that device and expire when the online version expires. The BBC's terms say radio shows are usually fine outside the UK. The BBC says it is interested in letting TV Licence holders use iPlayer abroad, but it cites complex technical issues and future UK law, and no launch is announced.
Quick questions
- Does BBC iPlayer work with a VPN?
- Yes, with some VPNs. In our research (October 2026), ExpressVPN, NordVPN, Surfshark and Proton VPN score 100% with BBC iPlayer (UK), IPVanish 62% and CyberGhost 33%. The BBC says it will not play a program if it detects a possible VPN or proxy, and its terms list using a VPN to watch from outside the UK as not allowed.
- Does my UK TV Licence let me watch BBC iPlayer abroad?
- Not for streaming. The BBC says you need to be in the UK to stream or download programs on iPlayer, and TV Licensing says you must be covered by a TV Licence to download or watch it wherever you are, VPN or not. The BBC says programs downloaded on a phone or tablet while you are in the UK can still be watched abroad.
- Can I watch BBC iPlayer abroad without a VPN?
- Downloads, yes: the BBC says programs downloaded on a phone or tablet while you are in the UK can be watched anywhere in the world, stay on that device and expire when the online version does. The BBC's terms tell users not to stream or download iPlayer TV shows outside the UK, though radio is usually fine.
- Why is BBC iPlayer not working with my VPN, NordVPN included?
- The BBC says it will not play a program when it detects a possible VPN or proxy, and advises turning the VPN off. ExpressVPN and NordVPN advise another UK server, and ExpressVPN, NordVPN, Surfshark and Proton VPN advise clearing the cache. NordVPN's help says to connect to any UK server.
- Is there a free VPN for BBC iPlayer?
- Not for regular use. Proton VPN has a free plan, but its iPlayer guide says you need a paid plan and a Plus server in the UK. You can try a VPN with its money-back guarantee: 30 days at most of the six, usually for new customers, and 45 days at CyberGhost on plans of six months or more. NordVPN and Surfshark also offer 7-day free trials on some plans.
- Is it illegal to use a VPN to watch BBC iPlayer abroad?
- We found no source that prohibits personal VPN use in the UK, and none that says it is legal. Our UK source is a cyber-security agency's guidance, so this is not legal advice, and the law elsewhere may differ. The BBC's terms are separate: they list using a VPN to watch iPlayer from outside the UK as not allowed, and the BBC says it blocks playback when it detects one.
How we rank
We score every VPN on four things: how well it works with BBC iPlayer in our research, which collects published results from reviewers, trackers and users; its apps for the TV devices people watch on; its features; and its price and refund terms. The BBC iPlayer (UK) score out of 10 weighs them, with the research counting most, and only VPNs with enough research data for BBC iPlayer are ranked. Commissions play no part in the ranking.
