In the iPlayer page code we read on 6 October 2026, the BBC carried the text "BBC iPlayer only works in the UK. Sorry, it's due to rights issues." We have not seen it on screen, and it was not in that page code when we looked again on 19 October 2026. The BBC says a possible VPN or proxy, a service that reroutes your traffic through another computer, can stop iPlayer playing.
BBC iPlayer's 'only works in the UK' message means its location check failed
The message means BBC iPlayer did not place your connection in the UK. The BBC works out where you are from the location of your internet provider. It checks your IP address, the number that identifies your connection online, and shows an error when it is not registered in the UK.
The message is not always right. The BBC's live-stream help points to this topic when a message wrongly says you are outside the UK.
| What you see | Why it happens | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| A block while a VPN is on. In the iPlayer page code we read on 6 October 2026, the text was "BBC iPlayer only works in the UK. Sorry, it's due to rights issues." | The BBC says a program will not play if it thinks you might be using a VPN or proxy. Nothing we read from the BBC says which text that triggers. | ExpressVPN and NordVPN advise another UK server. The BBC advises UK viewers to turn the VPN off. |
| The same block in the UK, on a work, university or hospital network | The BBC says the organization might route data outside the UK or use a proxy. | Ask the network's IT team, as the BBC says. |
| The same block in the UK, after your provider gave you a new IP address | The BBC says it can take a few weeks before a new address is recognized as UK. | Ask your internet provider whether the address is new. |
| The block in a phone's browser, while the app may work | The BBC says some mobile browsers send data outside the UK when data reduction is on. | Try the app, or turn off data reduction in the browser. |
| "Download Failed" in the app | The BBC says you cannot download or stream outside the UK, or when iPlayer thinks you are outside it. | Close the app completely and reopen it. On Android or Fire, sign out and clear the app cache. |
| "This programme is not available on BBC iPlayer." on a live channel | The BBC says it lacks online rights to some live broadcasts. It calls this a rights message, not a location error. | The location fixes on this page do not apply. |
| A BBC account that refuses your postcode | The BBC says only UK, Guernsey, Isle of Man and Jersey postcodes are accepted at registration. | Enter a postcode from one of those places. |

BBC iPlayer checks your IP address first, and VPN makers advise another UK server
BBC iPlayer checks your IP address first, and ExpressVPN and NordVPN advise another UK server when a VPN trips it. The BBC says a program will not play if it thinks you might be using a VPN or proxy, and nothing we read from it says how. Our guide to how streaming services detect VPNs explains the usual methods.
These steps come from the BBC and the VPN companies, so they are positions, not proof that a step works. ExpressVPN and CyberGhost write their iPlayer guides for UK users. Reload after each step and stop when it plays.
- For viewers in the UK, the BBC advises turning the VPN off, then refreshing the page in a browser or going back and selecting the program again in the app. If it plays, the VPN set off the block.
- ExpressVPN and NordVPN say to connect to another UK server. Check: our IP address check shows a UK location.
- NordVPN and Surfshark say not to run their browser extension and their app together. Check: only one of them is on.
- Optional: if every UK server fails, our BBC iPlayer VPN guide lists which VPNs work in our research.
Each VPN's own BBC guide adds a detail:
- ExpressVPN says to try five UK servers in order: East London, Dockland, London, Wembley, Midlands.
- NordVPN says any UK server will do, and Surfshark says to connect to a VPN location.
- CyberGhost says to pick a UK server optimized for streaming.
- Proton VPN says you need a paid plan and a UK server from its Plus tier.
- IPVanish's help-center search for "BBC iPlayer" returned no article when we looked on 19 October 2026.
In our October 2026 research, ExpressVPN, NordVPN, Surfshark and Proton VPN each reach 100% with BBC iPlayer (UK). IPVanish reaches 62% and CyberGhost 33%.

BBC iPlayer cookies and cache may help, so clear them, then check your DNS settings
ExpressVPN, NordVPN, Surfshark, Proton VPN and CyberGhost all list clearing the cache. The BBC says to try signing out and clearing it for problems with its websites, so it may help. No page we read says why.
Cookies and cache
- Sign out of your BBC account on the website or in the app.
- In a browser, clear the cache. ExpressVPN and CyberGhost add cookies. The BBC lists steps for Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Safari.
- In the Android app, long-press the app and open App info › Storage and cache › Clear cache. On an iPhone or iPad, the BBC says to delete and reinstall the app, which removes your downloads.
- Sign back in and play.
DNS and Smart DNS
DNS is the service that looks up the address of each site you visit. NordVPN's BBC help says to run a DNS leak test, which finds lookups that skip the VPN. It also says to turn off DNS over HTTPS or Secure DNS. Proton VPN lists clearing the DNS cache.
- With the VPN connected, run a DNS leak test. Check: every server listed belongs to the VPN, as Proton describes.
- In Chrome, turn off Use secure DNS. On a computer, it sits under More › Settings › Privacy and security › Security. On Android, it sits under More › Settings › Privacy and security.
Smart DNS only points some lookups at a provider's servers and leaves your IP address alone, as CyberGhost, NordVPN and ExpressVPN say. The BBC says iPlayer checks the IP address, so we do not expect Smart DNS to help.
BBC iPlayer in the app or the browser: try the other, then check device settings
When one fails, try the other. The BBC says to try the app when a mobile browser fails. ExpressVPN and CyberGhost say to try a web browser, and Proton VPN says to try a different one.
- On a computer, follow the BBC's order: close and reopen the browser, update it, try another browser, clear the cache, restart the computer.
- If a browser still shows your real address, run the WebRTC leak test.
- On a TV, Fire Stick, Apple TV or Chromecast, follow the BBC's steps: restart the device, disconnect it from the internet and reconnect, update its firmware, then uninstall and reinstall the app if the device allows it. For a TV with no VPN app, set up the VPN on a router with a VPN client instead.
- On a Chromecast with Google TV (2020), the BBC says older iPlayer app versions stop working at the end of September 2026 unless updated from Google Play.
Time zone, region and device
The BBC says iPlayer might not play if your device's time does not match its own. It tells mobile users to switch on automatic time zone.
- Android: Settings › Date & Time, then turn on Automatic Date & Time and Automatic Time Zone.
- iPhone and iPad: Settings › General › Date & Time, then turn on Set Automatically.
- Amazon Fire: Settings › Device Options › Date & Time, then turn on Automatic Time Zone.
iPlayer's own Change location setting is a different thing. It sets your TV guide to Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales or an English region. The BBC says it works out your country from your internet provider's location.
Optional: NordVPN's BBC article and ExpressVPN's general guide to services that verify your location both list turning location services off. The BBC's apps privacy notice lists no GPS, so this is not a documented BBC check.
BBC iPlayer can say it only works in the UK to viewers with no VPN
Viewers inside the UK can see the same block. The BBC names work, university and hospital networks, a newly assigned IP address, mobile data savers, compression apps, web accelerators and Tor. Reload after each step and stop when it plays.
- Run the address check with the VPN off, as the BBC suggests. Check: the result shows the UK and your provider.
- On a work, university or hospital network, check with the IT team, as the BBC says. Optional: try home Wi-Fi or mobile data.
- Turn off browser data reduction, data-compression apps and web accelerators.
- Ask your internet provider whether your address is new, as the BBC says to do before contacting its support.
- Optional: if you use iCloud+, Apple's iCloud Private Relay sends Safari traffic through two relays, so a site sees a temporary address. Nothing we read from the BBC says whether it treats Private Relay as a proxy. On an iPhone or iPad, open Settings › Wi-Fi, tap More Info next to the network and turn off Limit IP Address Tracking.
BBC iPlayer's 'Got a TV Licence?' prompt asks about your licence, not your location
The TV Licence question asks about your TV Licence, not your location. In the iPlayer page code we read on 6 October 2026, the prompt was titled "Got a TV Licence?" with the choices "I have a TV Licence. Watch now." and "I do not have a TV Licence." We have not seen it on screen.
- The BBC says that with BBC cookies off, iPlayer asks every time. To switch them on, click your name on a BBC page, choose Continue to settings and open the Privacy and cookies tab.
- TV Licensing, in a page capture of 26 September 2026, says using a VPN makes no difference to needing a TV Licence for iPlayer. The TV Licence rules and the BBC's terms are in the BBC iPlayer VPN guide linked above.
If BBC iPlayer still says it only works in the UK, contact the BBC or your VPN
If you are in the UK and nothing works, the BBC says to contact BBC iPlayer Support through its web form. Send your internet provider's name and the steps you tried.
- The BBC says to ask your internet provider first whether a new address is the cause.
- For a browser problem, its support also asks for the browser, when it started, any error message, any security or ad-blocking software and any VPN or work network.
- VPN users can contact their VPN's support team, as ExpressVPN and CyberGhost advise. CyberGhost asks for the app or browser used, the error and the steps tried.

Quick questions
- Why is NordVPN not working with BBC iPlayer?
- NordVPN reaches 100% with BBC iPlayer (UK) in our October 2026 research, so it is not failing for everyone. A score is a record, not a promise. Its help, which covers BBC Sounds too, says to use any UK server, clear the cache, run a DNS leak test and turn off Secure DNS. It also says to pause Real-time protection and try another device.
- Why does BBC iPlayer think I am abroad when I am in the UK?
- The BBC names work, university and hospital networks, a newly assigned IP address, mobile data savers and compression apps, and web accelerators as causes. It can take a few weeks before a new address is recognized as UK. The BBC's own help refers to a message that wrongly says you are outside the UK.
- Why is BBC iPlayer not working with my VPN on a Fire Stick, Apple TV or Chromecast?
- ExpressVPN and NordVPN advise another UK server. The BBC's steps for connected TVs, games consoles and streamers are to restart the device, reconnect it to the internet, update its firmware and reinstall the iPlayer app if the device allows it. Router makers say a VPN client on a router covers every device on the network, including TVs with no VPN app.
- Does clearing cookies and the cache fix BBC iPlayer's UK message?
- Five VPN makers list it: ExpressVPN, NordVPN, Surfshark, Proton VPN and CyberGhost. The BBC says to sign out and clear the cache for problems with its websites. None of these pages says why it would help with the location message.
- What does 'This content is not available in your location' mean on BBC iPlayer?
- CyberGhost's blog quotes that wording for iPlayer, but we found it in none of the BBC sources we read, so we cannot say it is the BBC's wording. The text the BBC's web pages carried in the iPlayer page code we read on 6 October 2026 was 'BBC iPlayer only works in the UK. Sorry, it's due to rights issues.' We have not seen it on screen.
